The week's big numbers: Cibona dominant in Zagreb; Bristol throws Bonn a block party

MUNICH (FIBA Europe Cup) – The field was reduced to just eight teams in the FIBA Europe Cup following the completion of the Round of 16 stage, with Cibona Zagreb headlining the list of Quarter-Finalists after plowing their way through Stelmet Zielona Gora.

The Croatian side registered the biggest aggregate point differential at this stage of the competition, but it was just one of many interesting storylines that developed during second-leg action on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Muratbey Usak Sportif completed a 26-point swing against CSM CSU Oradea on their home floor after losing by double figures in Romania, while Kataja Basket big man Kervin Bristol blocked a FIBA Europe Cup all-time high 7 shots against Telekom Baskets, but couldn't block the Bonn side from the Quarter-Finals.

Like at the end of every week, we take a closer look at what took place across European arenas through a lens of numbers.

Kataja Basket big man Kervin Bristol set new all-time FIBA Europe Cup record in blocks by swatting away 7 shots in the second leg of the tie against Telekom Baskets. The player scored 2 points on 1-of-3 shooting from the field and grabbed 7 rebounds, but his main input came on the defensive end.

The previous milestone of 6 blocks was shared by Dejan Kravic and Janar Talts, who both registered it last season. Before the big night by Bristol, Djordje Gagic of Tsmoki led all players with 5 blocks in a single this season.

Pau-Lacq-Orthez guard Yannick Bokolo found the worst time to get called for a technical foul for exaggerating contact on the screen set by Telenet Oostende big man Rasko Katic. The referees punished the French player with 15 seconds left in the game, when the French side would have had a chance to level the aggregate score on the next possession, providing they got a defensive stop.

Holding a 9-point deficit from the first leg, Elan Bearnais were up 72-65 in the game at that point, but had to resort to fouling intentionally. Dusan Djordjevic, who collected 15 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists for Oostende in the game, converted all five foul shots to ice the game.

Muratbey Usak Oradea and Nanterre 92 were the only teams to complete second-leg turnarounds after losing the first games of the Round of 16 ties, but the Turkish team's achievement was by far the more impressive one.

Having lost to CSM CSU Oradea by double figures in Romania, the Usak side rode the hot hand of Sarunas Vasiliauskas and dominant inside play by Zach Auguste and routed the visitors 108-82, turning what once was 10-point deficit into a 16-point advantage on aggregate.

Meanwhile, Nanterre came into the home game down by a single point and booked a place in the Quarter-Finals by downing Proximus Spirou 86-78 at home.

Cibona Zagreb were the most dominant side in the Round of 16, winning their bracket pairing with Stelmet Zielona Gora by the biggest aggregate margin of any team at this stage of the competition.

Having defeated the Polish club by 12 points on the road, the Croatian club added a 102-83 win at the Drazen Petrovic Basketball Hall for a combined advantage of 31 points.

"This was one of our best games of the season. We controlled the game from the start. Tonight, we were the better team," said Cibona guard Petar Maric after the second leg of the tie in Zagreb.

Telekom Baskets won their tie by 23 points on aggregate, Elan Chalon topped Kormend by 21 points, while Usak got the better of Oradea by 16 points.

On the other end of the spectrum, Enisey won their tie by just 2 points.

39

Gaziantep fired away three-pointers like there was no tomorrow against Ironi Nahariya, as they attempted to battle back from a 21-point first-leg deficit. The Turkish side attempted a total of 39 three-pointers, second most in a FIBA Europe Cup game by any team this season.

After going 7-of-11 from deep in the first quarter alone, Gaziantep cooled off as the game went along and finished the evening with 11-of-39 from beyond the arc, good for only 28% percent.

Even with the poor shooting, Stefanos Dedas' side had managed to erase the 21-point gap at one point in the game, but couldn't tip the tie in their direction, with Ironi Nahariya holding off their challenge in the fourth quarter.

Interestingly enough, the season record of 40 three-point attempts also belongs to Gaziantep, who set the mark in a Second Round game against Mures, when they went 18-of-40 from three-point range.

Demir Insaat and Enisey had to play two extra periods of basketball in Istanbul after not being able to settle the winner of the tie in regulation. Having entered the game with a 10-point cushion, the Russian side quickly saw it turn into thin air, but Buyukcekmece couldn't swing the game their way as well.

Jerry Johnson, Kenneth Hayes and Angelo Caloiaro played more than 40 minutes for the Turkish team, who had an excellent chance to claim the victory in the first overtime, but Tayfun Erulku missed two clutch free-throws in the dying seconds.

Eric Buckner sustained an injury in regulation and Andrija Stipanovic fouled out in overtime, leaving no other option for coach Ozhan Civgin but to rely players like Erulku, Ramazan Tekin, Emre Ekim, Mutlu Akipnar, who did a fine job for the most part, but were ultimately denied passage to the Quarter-Finals by a game-winning three-pointer by Alexey Vzdykhalkin.

Frank Elegar saw the most court time for Enisey at just under 40 minutes.

82

The Round of 16 second-leg fixture between Elan Chalon and Kormend finished as the first and possibly the last drawn FIBA Europe Cup game this season. The French side had defeated their Hungarian rivals by 21 points on the road, so the final score of 82-82 was still very much in their favor.

However, the team's head coach Jean-Denys Choulet expressed his frustration with the lack of quality his side demonstrated: "It's a good thing we advanced to the next round. But honestly, this was our worst game of the season, preseason included. I'm disappointed."
