FIBA Europe Cup - Tuesday Focus: Week 6

MUNICH (FIBA Europe Cup) – With qualification for the FIBA Europe Cup Second Round on the line, Tuesday's action might be the last chance for some of the teams to prove their worth on the international stage this season.

Without a glimmer of doubt, the main focus will be on two of the later games of the day in Chalon-sur-Saone and Mons-Hainaut, but results in other arenas could also carry major impact.

Kormend and Donar Groningen, who play on Wednesday, will also follow these games, as they will detemine whether Group B teams will be in the running for one of the two best third-placed qualification spots allocated per conference.

We would like to remind you that you can watch all FIBA Europe Cup games LIVE and FREE on YouTube.com/FIBA.

Elan Chalon (3-2) v Alba Fehervar (4-1), 20:00 CET

Two teams in Group A have already secured a place in the Second Round, but Elan Chalon are not among them just yet. Despite being second in the group standings, it is Alba Fehervar and third-placed SL Benfica with tickets to the next phase of the competition.

However, last year's Final Four participants have various qualification paths after keeping the head-to-head tie-breaker advantage against Benfica last week, despite losing by 8 points.

No matter how you slice it, a win would be enough for Elan Chalon to progress as the second-placed team in Group A. If Jean-Denys Choulet's side were to lose their final game at Le Colisee, it could still finish second in the standings if Benfica lost at home against the winless Brussels Basketball.

The only possible complication for Elan Chalon is the scenario in which the French side loses against Alba Fehervar, while Benfica picks up a win against their Belgian guests.

If that were to occur, the French side would finish the Regular Season third in Group A, which wouldn't automatically rule out qualification, but would definitely make things more complicated, as the Chalon-sur-Saone club would be dependent on results in other groups.

Since games against the fourth-placed teams will be discarded in determining the best third-placed teams, Elan Chalon would be left with a 1-3 record, like many of the third-placed teams in other groups. Therefore, point differential will be crucial.

Belfius Mons-Hainaut (1-2) v Telekom Baskets (2-1), 20:30 CET

Belfius Mons-Hainaut are the only side not qualified for the Second Round in the three-team Group C, but they have their fate in their own hands in the last game of the Regular Season against Telekom Baskets.

The German side, like the other team in the group Sodertalje Kings, have already qualified with two wins apiece. However, a win is all it takes for Mons-Hainaut to be sure of a place in the next phase.

In case of a three-way tie between all three teams, all of them would advance, as the third-placed team, likely Sodertalje in this scenario, would claim one of the two allocated spots for the lucky losers of Conference 1.

In fact, the Belgian club could easily finish first in Group C, if their victory margin against Telekom Baskets would be four points or more.

Meanwhile, a big loss to Bonn would be the least desirable outcome for Mons-Hainaut, who would still have a chance to qualify as the best third-place team even with a 1-3 record.

Currently, only a couple of points separate the potential candidates for the best third-placed qualification spots in terms of point differential, so every point could be decisive.

If they cannot earn qualification by winning on Tuesday, Belfius Mons-Hainaut will have to follow the developments in Group A and Group B very closely.
