Domestic round-up: Chalon, Nanterre and Bonn victorious; Oostende drop a rare one

MUNICH (FIBA Europe Cup) – All four FIBA Europe Cup Semi-Finalists were in action in domestic championship over the weekend, but only Elan Chalon, Nanterre 92 and Telekom Baskets managed to notch up victories, with Telenet Oostende suffering a rare defeat in Belgium.

Elan Chalon keep second place in France

The Jean-Denys Choulet-coached Elan Chalon climbed to second place in the French LNB Pro A after improving to an 18-7 record with a convincing 87-74 victory against Antibes Sharks on the road all the way by the Mediterranean coast.

The long journey from Ostend did not seem to affect the side on the floor, with John Roberson leading six players in double figures with a team-high 18 points and 9 assists. After making just 4-of-12 shots from the field against Telenet Oostende in the first leg of the Semi-Finals, the team's star playmaker got back on track with a 7-of-10 shooting night.

Axel Bouteille scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Cameron Clark chipped in with 13 points and 7 boards, while Jeremy Nzeulie added 11 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Nanterre back to winning ways

One game behind Chalon in the standings and currently in fourth place with a 17-8 mark, Nanterre ended a two-game skid by edging SLUC Nancy 78-73 away from home on the back of Mathias Lessort's big performance.

The 21-year-old big man was the team's leading scorer with 20 points and also added 9 rebounds, a steal and 2 blocks to his tally. Heiko Schaffartzik was also close to a double-double after collecting all of his 18 points from downtown with 6 three-pointers and dishing out 9 assists.

Nanterre had to do without Spencer Butterfield, who didn't travel to Nancy with the team due to an injury. No specific details about the circumstances were given, but the club assured in a statement the player would be back on the court quickly.

Drama in Frankfurt ends well for Bonn

Telekom Baskets improved their position in the German easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga by getting a nerve-wracking 74-73 win against last year's FIBA Europe Cup champions Fraport Skyliners to climb to fifth in the table with a 16-10 record.

The trio of Joshua Mayo, Julian Gamble and Yorman Polas Bartolo accounted for the majority of the team's scoring with the remaining seven players of the team combining for just 14 points.

Mayo had a game-high 24 points and 5 assists, Gamble added a double-double of 20 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks, while Bartolo chipped in with 16 points, but finished the game early having fouled out in the final quarter.

"We have a big game on Wednesday in the FIBA Europe Cup, but needed to focus on first things first and in the end we made some big plays to win the game," said Gamble, who scored the game-winning basket with 46 seconds left on the clock on a second-chance opportunity.

Oostende's winning streak ends in Belgium

The defending Belgian champions Telenet Oostende were handed only their fifth defeat in the Belgian EuroMillions Basketball League, as their 10-game winning streak was snapped by Kangoeroes Basket Willebroek, who made the headlines with a 79-75 win.

In spite of the loss, coach Dario Gjergja's side have a healthy lead at the top of the standings with a 22-5 record and a four-game lead over the second-placed Antwerp Giants.

Dusan Djordjevic and Pierre-Antoine Gillet shared a team-high of 15 points for the Ostend club, while Vincent Kesteloot chipped in with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Telenet Oostende had last lost in the domestic championship in the closing days of January against Okapi Aalstar.
