Iceland win a thriller in Group B, Quarter-Finals promise even more fireworks

CHALKIDA (FIBA U20 European Championship 2016 Division B) - Teams will use a day off on Thursday after a fantastic final group game day, with more drama still to come when the Quarter-Finals tip off on Friday.

Iceland have not played at U20 level since 2011, but their return is a triumphant one so far. The team won a thriller against Poland 62-60 and claimed top spot in Group B heading into the final weekend of the championship.

Jakub Niziol's triple had given Poland a 59-58 lead heading into the last minute of the game, but Jon Axel Gudmundsson answered straight away to give Iceland a 60-59 lead. Marcel Ponitka missed a shot with 15 seconds left, and Hjalmar Stefansson stayed cool from the line to make it 62-59 with six seconds left on the clock. Stefansson had two more clutch moves. He first fouled Bartosz Jankowski to prevent Poland from taking a potential game-tying three-pointer, and then claimed the most important rebound of the game to win the game for Iceland.

Stefansson's late game heroics made up for his shooting struggles as he missed all nine shots from the field. Stefansson finished with five points and six rebounds. Gudmundsson led the team with 16 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Iceland managed to survive on 8-of-42 shooting from long range. Jankowski had 12 points for Poland. In the same group, Belarus defeated Estonia 72-70 on a game-winning shot by Maksim Salash.

Iceland will play Georgia in the Quarter-Finals, while Poland take on the still undefeated Montenegro. Georgia lost another close game of the day, but Armenia's 65-62 win did not influence the standings in Group A. Portugal defeated The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia 63-54 to claim third spot in the group.

Greece won the battle for Group C. Star player Vasileios Charalampopoulos picked a perfect time for his best showing at the championship. His 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor were enough to hand Great Britain their first loss of the tournament. An 82-61 win means Greece will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Quarter-Finals, while Great Britain have to face a 4-0 Croatian team.

Ireland finished third in Group C, following their 67-52 win over Kosovo, the Netherlands got fourth place with a 65-54 win over Albania.

Croatia had earlier secured first place in Group D, and their neighbours from Bosnia and Herzegovina stayed close in the final standings. A 74-58 win over Bulgaria saw Bosnia and Herzegovina through, while Slovak Republic recorded their first win of the championship with a 75-71 outing against Romania.
