Markkanen lights up Day 2 in Helsinki

HELSINKI (FIBA U20 European Championship 2016) – Lauri Markkanen lifted the roof off Helsinki Ice Stadium on Sunday as he capped a stunning overtime triumph for Finland against Spain.

The pressure was on the hosts as they took to the floor in front of 5,500 fans having fallen to Israel in their FIBA U20 European Championship Group B opener.

But Markkanen rose to the occasion and was inspired throughout, going for 33 points, the final two proving decisive as he tipped in the Tomas Murphy miss with just two seconds remaining in the extra session.

There was another surprise in the other Group B game as Israel made it two wins from two with an 86-66 triumph against France.

In Group D, Italy recovered from opening-day defeat to overpower Belgium 89-64 while Czech Republic came from behind to prevail over Sweden.

Turkey turned up the defensive pressure to outlast Germany 67-63 in Group A before Lithuania coasted to a 128-69 success against Hungary.

And Ukraine lit it up from long-range to upset reigning champions Serbia in Group C where there was also a win for Latvia against Slovenia.
