MVP Gilli headlines #FIBAU16Europe All-Star Five

KAUNAS (FIBA U16 Women’s European Championship 2018) - Italian forward Caterina Gilli capped a wonderful tournament by taking home the MVP hardware.

Gilli’s magnificent Semi-Final performance against Spain lifted her team when they most needed it. Spain could not stop her as she racked up 25 points and 17 rebounds, adding a pair blocks for an efficiency of 33 in a stellar display.

A focal point for Italy on both ends, Gilli did not post any other spectacular stat-lines during the tournament, as the well-balanced Italian champions blew out most of their early opponents. The 16-year-old forward was solid in the Final with 9 points and 7 boards, and she ended as the tournament’s third-highest rebounder.

She was joined on the All-Star Five by her vanquished opponent in the Final, Czech playmaker Katerina Zeithammerova. The guard’s reputation was built upon a succession of big shots, not least the game-winner in the Quarter-Final thriller against Hungary.

Turkey’s Sude Yilmaz was nominated after her inspirational performances during Turkey’s fantastic run that ultimately ended without a medal. Her 21-point first half set the team on the way in their Round of 16 match against Latvia, and she ended in the top 10 for points and rebounds.

Bronze medalists Spain had two representatives in the All-Star Five, with electrifying playmaker Mama Dembele joined by forward Marta Garcia. Dembele was a defensive pest, racking up an amazing 4.6 steals per game with a high of 7 in the Quarter-Final against Poland, while she had 9 assists in the Semi-Final loss to Italy and another 8 in the Third-Place Game win over Turkey. Garcia added 9 points, 9 boards and 2 blocks in the victory against Turkey.
