Cyprus revel in gold triumph; Scotland storm to bronze

CHISINAU (Moldova) - Cyprus celebrated lifting the FIBA U16 Women’s European Championship, Division C title after an emphatic win against Georgia in Sunday’s Final.

Panagiota Kyriakou starred in the 75-38 success with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Ioanna Kyprianou contributed 13 points, 15 boards, 8 assists and 6 steals.

 

Georgia had also been unbeaten in making the title showdown - after edging out Scotland 65-63 in the Semi-Finals - but were left to settle for silver, despite the efforts of Keso Barbakadze with 16 points and 19 rebounds.

Cyprus dominated the middle periods, outscoring their opponents 44-17 in the second and third quarter on their way to securing a first title at the event since 2013.

Meanwhile, Scotland took bronze after denying the hosts Moldova in a 76-35 victory. Eva Morrison led the way with 14 points and 7 steals with teammate Jenni Torrance also in double figures with 12 points.

Wales eased to 58-29 win over Gibraltar to secure 5th spot, with Malta behind in 6th having also beaten Gibraltar on Saturday.
