Belgium and Denmark clinch promotion, just one step away from Division B gold

SKOPJE (FIBA U16 Women's European Championship 2017, Division B) - Belgium and Denmark will square off for the FIBA U16 Women's European Championship 2017, Division B title after clinching promotion with wins in the Semi-Finals round in Skopje.

Both teams are still unbeaten in the tournament, but one of these perfect records will have to give in the Final on Saturday. Meanwhile, Greece and Ukraine will play it out in the Third-Place game.

The Danes were the first ones to lock in a spot in the gold-medal game, breezing past Ukraine 54-38 with Malene Pedersen, once again, leading the way with a game-high 17 points.

Having built a double-digit gap already in the first quarter of play, Denmark set themselves up for safe cruising in the second half. Katrine Jessen was the team's other big contributor with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Viktoriia Rostoska collected 15 points and 6 rebounds in a losing effort for Ukraine.

Belgium had to exert a little more energy to get over the Semi-Finals hurdle but also handled their business in convincing fashion, holding off Greece to take a 70-63 win.

Having shot ahead to a game-high 13-point lead in the third quarter, the Belgians unexpectedly found themselves on the defensive after the Greeks made it a one-point game early in the fourth period. However, the Sam Van Buggenhout-led Belgium side cut the comeback short with a 10-1 run of their own to re-establish control of the game.

Van Buggenhout collected a game-high 22 points for the winners, while Maxuella Lisowa Mbaka chipped in with 15 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists. Ioanna Chatzileonti and Christina Anastasopoulou collected 19 and 18 points for Greece respectively, with the latter also locking down 13 rebounds.

In the Classification Games for 5-8th places, Portugal and Sweden went to overtime, with the Portuguese side eventually pulling away for a 55-52 win. In the other fixture, Finland inscribed a 71-59 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina, as Awak Kueier registered her fourth double-double of the tournament with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Ireland got the mid-table battles for 9-12th places underway with a close 57-53 win over Switzerland in spite of trailing by as many as 15 points in the first half. Later in the day, Israel downed Slovenia 82-68.

Luxembourg edged out Estonia 47-45 in the Classification Games for 13-16th places with Tanja De Rond scoring nearly half of the team's points in a 23-point and 8-rebound performance, while Bulgaria celebrated a 58-49 win over the Slovak Republic.

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Great Britain won their respective groups in the Classification Games for 17-22nd place after the Macedonians defeated Norway 62-55 and the British side clipped Iceland 43-42 following a fourth-quarter comeback. The winners of the groups will go up against each other, as will the second-placed Norway and Iceland and third-placed Albania and Moldova.
