Moldova use big fourth quarter to defeat Wales, Malta take first in Group B

GIBRALTAR (FIBA Women's European Championship for Small Countries 2016) - Moldova claimed second place in Group A with a win over Wales, while Malta stayed perfect in Group B.

It was a two-point game between Wales and Moldova heading into the final 10 minutes, but Wales ran out of gas. Moldova only used six players, three of them playing the full 40 minutes, but had enough energy to get a 67-52 win and second place in Group A.

Ala Gavrilita led all scorers with 25 points, while also grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists. Natalia Burlacova had a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds, 40-year-old Ala Causan finished with 11 points. Sarah Wagstaff and Melanie Louise Curson scored 16 points apiece for Wales.

In Group B, Malta won first place after cruising to a 76-29 victory against Gibraltar. Joelle Moreno scored 12 of the hosts' 29 points, but Stephanie De Martino and Christina Grima single-handedly outscored Gibraltar. De Martino ended with 20 points, Grima had 14 for Malta, who had 10 players with at least 2 points.

On Friday, Andorra and Wales will face off in the first qualifying game for the Semi-Finals. The winner takes on Ireland in the Semi-Finals on Saturday. Malta await the winner of the Moldova and Gibraltar match-up.
