Andorra and Moldova through to the Semi-Finals

GIBRALTAR (FIBA Women's European Championship for Small Countries 2016) - Andorra and Moldova reached the last four after winning their qualifying games for Semi-Finals on Friday. Gibraltar and Wales will battle for fifth place.

Andorra's defence was the key in a 55-48 win over Wales. Hermilo Andre Pereira Nunes' team allowed just 14 points after the break, and held Wales scoreless for five minutes in the decisive fourth period.

Megan Jenkins had made it a one-point game with seven minutes to go before Alba Pla Marsinach led a 6-0 Andorra run to make it 52-45 with two minutes left. Sarah Wagstaff connected on a three-pointer to bring Wales back to 52-48, but Andorra held on for a place in the Semi-Finals.

Claudia Brunet Solanos struggled from the field but still managed a game-high 18 points, while also grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out three assists. Pla Marsinach finished with 12 points, 7 boards and 2 blocks. Laura Jane Shanahan was the only Welsh player in double digits with 13 points.

Andorra will face Ireland in the Semi-Finals on Saturday. The other pairing sees taking Malta and Moldova, the former of whom used a monster first quarter to see off the hosts.

Gibraltar fell 29-6 behind after the opening ten minutes of the game and there was no making up the deficit. Moldova enjoyed a comfortable 75-49 win, with four of their players reaching double-digits.

Natalia Burlacova led the offence with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Ala Causan flirted with a triple-double, as the 40-year-old finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists in less than 30 minutes of play. Daria Verbitcaia had 14 points and four blocks, Ala Gavrilita ended with 10 points.

Joelle Moreno scored 16 points for Gibraltar. The home team can now enjoy a day off before the fifth-place game against Wales on Sunday.
