Rodriguez, Ibekwe headline Top Performers after leading Girona into Round of 8

MUNICH (EuroCup Women) – Leonor Rodriguez and Ify Ibekwe stole the spotlight as Spar Citylift Girona fended off TSV 1880 Wasserburg 79-71 to win their Round of 16 match-up and reach the next stage of EuroCup Women in undefeated fashion.

Having prevailed 66-62 on the road in the first leg, the Spanish side finished business on Wednesday night, with Rodriguez and Ibekwe proving a perfect one-two punch.

25-year-old guard Rodriguez was on triple-double watch, as she corralled 17 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, adding 4 assists for a week-high efficiency rating of 32. Ibekwe complemented her team-mate’s performance with a strong presence in the paint, her 22 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals earning her Top Performer honors for the second week in a row.

The second week of Round of 16 action seemingly belonged to the guards, as Moriah Jefferson sparkled for Galatasaray to match Rodriguez’ efficiency of 32. Leading the competition in points and steals, the 22-year-old filled the stats sheet with 23 points, 9 assists and 5 steals to a lead her team to a comfortable 81-49 home win over PEAC-Pecs and a spot in the next round.

The Istanbul club will be looking to keep their perfect record intact when they face Virtus Eirene Ragusa in the Round of 8. The Italian club joined the party after defeating Nymburk 128-110 on aggregate, with Astou Ndour shining in the return game. The Spanish international made up for her poor shooting performance in the first game by collecting a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double for an efficiency of 29.

The week’s Top Performers are completed by Kim Mestdagh, who would likely trade her individual accolades for a ticket to the last eight. Mestdagh scored a game-high 20 points to go with 5 rebounds and 5 steals in Flammes Carolo Basket’s 72-58 win against Good Angels Kosice. However, it had a bitter-sweet taste, as the French side failed to overturn the 19-point deficit from the first leg.
