Golden oldie Wauters headlines weekly Top Performers

MUNICH (EuroCup Women) – It was a bitter-sweet Wednesday evening for Belgian veteran Ann Wauters, as she came up with her best performance of the season, but could not prevent Bellona AGU from suffering their first loss in the current EuroCup Women campaign.

In a battle of previously undefeated teams, the Turkish side lost to Spar Citylift Girona 71-63 in the first leg of the Round of 8. Bellona AGU will be looking to overturn the eight-point deficit in the return leg at home – a task which seems more feasible with Wauters dominating under the baskets.

In Girona, the 36-year-old shot 10-of-12 from the field on the way to 20 points, and added 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 blocks. Her stat line accumulated in an efficiency of 39, earning her weekly Top Performer honors.

Ify Ibekwe found herself on the winning side and could additionally celebrate a spot on the Top Performers for the third time in a row. The 27-year-old forward led Girona with 21 points, 9 boards and 4 assists.

Reyer Venezia also started the Round of 8 on a high, defeating visiting Yakin Dogu Universitesi 65-56. Ashley Walker and Ashleigh Fontenette both made the team of the week, with the former corralling 21 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks, and the latter adding 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

The Top Performers are rounded out by Hungarian point guard Dora Medgyessy, who filled the stats sheet with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 10 assists and an outstanding 7 steals. However, her efforts were not rewarded as her team VBW CEKK Cegled went down 79-64 at Good Angels Kosice.
