EuroCup Women Qualifiers: Day 1 Review

GDYNIA (EuroCup Women 2017) – Jelena Skerovic rolled back the years with a scintillating and eye-popping 16 assists to fire Basket 90 Gdynia to an opening night win in the EuroCup Women 2017 Qualifiers.

Showing all of the veteran quality which has defined a standout career spanning almost two decades, the Montenegrin ace helped Gdynia ease to a 74-64 victory in their first leg match-up against Elfic Fribourg.

It’s been several years since fans in Gdynia have watched European club basketball and while Skerovic stole the headlines, there was also 13 points and 15 rebounds from Lithuanian forward Monika Grigalauskyte.

Fribourg will feel they still have a shot in next week’s second leg and not least because of Jazmine Davis who accumulated a superb 32 points.

There was also a win for Samsun on their return to EuroCup Women and a slice of history too. The last time they were involved during 2009-10, they lost all of their six games. It took a phenomenal performance from 2016 EuroCup Women winner Eshaya Murphy to get the job done, 82-79 against Chevakata. The swingman posted a colossal line of 33 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals.

Despite their defeat, the Russian visitors are unlikely to be dissatisfied with the second leg to come in Vologda and they also had a special performance in the shape of a brilliant 35 points and 15 rebounds from Emma Cannon.

In the other game on opening night, there were celebrations in the visiting locker room as Piestanske Cajky sealed a 74-64 triumph at PEAC-Pecs to get themselves on the front foot and heading towards the Regular Season.

Monique Oliver announced herself on the EuroCup Women stage in a big way with 25 points from a mesmerising 73% floor shooting performance, as well as completing a fine night of work with 10 rebounds. Dorina Zele starred with 20 points in defeat.

The other first leg games in the EuroCup Women 2017 Qualifiers will take place on Thursday.
