Hungarian happiness: Sopron top Group B, DVTK get it done at the death

MUNICH (Germany) - Reigning champions Sopron Basket are back in pole position in Group B, while it was double delight for Hungary as DVTK Hun-Therm collected a dramatic win against Beretta Famila Schio.

Sopron didn't let the pause in action disrupt their momentum as they completed a 71-64 win against Kangoeroes Mechelen. A confident start put Sopron on the path to victory and while the Belgian visitors got close late in the third and pushed hard until the final buzzer had sounded, the home team were always the more likely winners and so it proved.

As usual, the veteran leadership of Jelena Brooks was important and she was the pick of five Sopron players in double-digits. The Serbian forward finished with 21 points and 6 rebounds, while Morgan Bertsch was unfortunate to be on the losing team after adding 21 points in defeat.

Beaten by Sopron heavily in their last game of 2022, Schio looked to be bouncing back to winning ways in 2023, but DVTK had other ideas. They improved to 4-4 with a pulsating and nail-biting 65-63 triumph that was built around a strong finish to the game when the pressure was on.

Down 58-51 in the middle of the last quarter, DVTK got themselves tied up heading into the last three minutes off the back of a triple by Darcee Garbin and a series of clutch free-throws sealed the win. Garbin claimed a team-high 17 points, while 10 boards from Brit forward Cheridene Green helped too.

Astou Ndour top-scored for Schio with 13 points as they suffered successive losses to fall to a 5-3 record alongside three other clubs in the group.
