Girona shut down arch rivals Avenida; the Polkowice fairytale continues

MUNICH (Germany) - Spar Girona were sensational in their Spanish derby matchup against Perfumerias Avenida on Wednesday night, while there's still no stopping this season's surprise package BC Polkowice.

It was a significant statement win from Girona as they dealt a heavy blow to Avenida with a brilliant and dominant 74-48 victory. Having only just won recently in a Spanish league game, Girona might just have their rivals' number this season after a performance that will make everyone sit up and take notice.

They made their move in the second quarter, locking down the Avenida offense and restricting them to 6 points. The one-two punch of Rebekah Gardner and Maria Araujo did most of the damage. Gardner netted 19 points, with her teammate accumulating 15 points and 9 boards as Girona moved to 4-3, while Avenida picked up only their second loss, as no player made it to double-digits in scoring.

Polkowice continue to sit in pole position in Group A with an improved 6-1 record, getting their latest victory in significant style as they powered past Atomeromu KSC Szekszard 89-56. The level of confidence is sky-high and teamwork is certainly making their dream work.

The Polish club dished out 35 assists in the contest, more than any other club in any game this season, with Erica Wheeler handing out 13 and Weronika Gajda 12. There was also 15 points and 10 rebounds from Steph Mavunga, a team-high 17 points from Klaudia Gertechen, while Zala Friskovec starred with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Fenerbahce Alagoz Holding are in joint second in Group A after registering a fifth consecutive win by racing past Tango Bourges Basket 83-64 with an eye-catching team performance. Always on the front foot, the hosts racked up 26 first quarter points and once they built a handy lead, they never had cause to look back.

No fewer than five Fenerbahce ballers made it to double-digits, with Natasha Howard and Alina Iagupova leading the way with 19 and 18 points respectively. Bourges drop to 3-4, with their three-point shooting continuing to hurt them after they went 3 of 14 from long-range. Yvonne Anderson top-scored with 20 points.

ZVVZ USK Praha are locked on 5 wins and 2 losses with Fenerbahce after they came away from Virtus Segafredo Bologna with an 85-61 success.

The win was built around the contributions of leading stars Brionna Jones and Alyssa Thomas who were a real handful for the Virtus defense. Jones had 22 points and 16 rebounds on the final buzzer, with Thomas harvesting 18 points and 14 rebounds. Cheyenne Parker impressed in defeat with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists, although the Italian club have now slumped to 2-5,

DVTK Hun-Therm obtained their third win of the campaign in Group B by beating Basket Landes 67-58, although they had to stave off a late rescue mission from the visitors. Cruising with a 14-point advantage heading into the last quarter, DVTK were left scrambling after Landes scored the first 11 points of the fourth period.

But the Hungarian side put their foot back on the gas to re-establish control and prospered from a fine double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds from Cheridene Green. Playmaker Arella Guirantes also produced 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
