Game of the Week: Girona and Schio both chasing a big jumpstart

GIRONA (Spain) - After sealing opening day wins, whoever comes out on top between Spar Girona and Beretta Famila Schio in our Game of the Week will have secured a precious jump start to the new season.

In what could be a tight Group B, the prospect of starting the campaign with a precious 2-0 record is a huge incentive in what could be a real dogfight for a top four spot and a ticket to the Quarter-Finals.

These two clubs both made some relatively extensive roster changes during the off-season, but if Gameday 1 is anything to go by, the chemistry looks strong and they seem ready to serve up an exciting encounter.

You can watch the live broadcast of the game between Spar Girona and Beretta Famila Schio on the EuroLeague Women YouTube channel on Wednesday, November 2 at 20:45 CET.

Form guide: Girona dug out a narrow 58-53 road win at Basket Landes on opening day. Domestically, they are unbeaten with a flawless 4-0 record and are top of Liga Femenina after an eye-catching 65-49 home win against EuroCup Women side Lointek Gernika.

Meanwhile, Schio took care of business with a hard-fought 90-82 overtime win against DVTK Hun-Therm. They are also top of their own league in Italy having won all six of their games, with their latest success a dominant 103-69 triumph against E-Work Faenza.

Last meeting: The teams met in the previous Regular Season and Spar Girona won this fixture 65-55 in December last year. Their first meeting was only in 2019 and Girona have won four of six meetings, whilst never losing on their home floor.

Rebekah Gardner always brings the noise for Spar Girona and is the centerpiece of their team.

Key matchup: Rebekah Gardner is the heartbeat of this Girona team. Retained from last season, she is the source of most joy and so turning off this tap is likely to be a primary aim for the visitors. Could Schio's impressive new signing Rhyne Howard end up going toe to toe with Gardner? Maybe so and that could be a fun matchup to watch as the Schio baller had a nice debut last week.

X-factor: Has Schio got what it takes to turn up the tempo and push Girona into a more free-scoring game? If it is below 65-60 points, Girona are in their happy place. They love slugging it out as they showed at Landes. While Schio coach Dikaioulakos is someone who is normally renowned for his defensive qualities, maybe this time the 'X Factor' will be the Italians cutting loose. If they do, then Girona may not have the same offensive punch to keep up.
