Sopron bank Quarter-Finals berth despite loss; Fenerbahce cement Group B top spot

MUNICH (Germany) - All eyes were on EuroLeague Women Group B on Wednesday night as Sopron Basket reached the last eight of the competition, while Fenerbahce Safiport showed their teeth to secure first place in the group.

Sopron advance to the post-season courtesy of Fenerbahce's success earlier in the day and despite falling 61-52 at Basket Landes. Hit by several absences, including the experienced guard duo of Nevena Jovanovic and Zsofia Fegyverneky, the visitors struggled offensively, with only Bernadett Hatar excelling after she harvested 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Yet full credit is due to Landes, who boosted their chances of parachuting into the EuroCup Women Quarter-Finals. Both Regan Magarity and Jillian Harmon inked identical double-doubles - each amassing 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Fenerbahce Safiport had to work immensely hard to secure first place in the group as they rode their way to a 63-57 victory at Dynamo Kursk. Some tough defense proved highly important for the visitors, as did a mighty 21 points and 15 rebounds from Elizabeth Williams,

This display more than matched another double-double from Natasha Howard of Kursk, who showed why she was named MVP for January with another impressive tally of 13 points and 15 rebounds.

The last Quarter-Finals place on offer in the group will be taken by either Spar Girona or Beretta Famila Schio, after both clubs picked up road wins. The former were too strong for VBW Arka Gdynia, racking up a comfortable 78-65 victory, thanks mainly to a big second quarter when they poured in 27 points.

Kennedy Burke hit a high gear for Girona with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals, while Megan Gustafson netted 25 points in defeat for Gdynia.

Beretta Famila Schio did the business on their travels by beating Galatasaray 80-67 in Istanbul with an eye-catching shooting display, led as usual by Sandrine Gruda.

The French ace finished with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists, while Jasmine Keys continued her strong form this season with an efficient 11 points and 9 boards.

Galatasaray finished their campaign on a low note as they dropped to a disappointing 5-9, despite 20 points from Kelsey Plum and 10 assists from Pelin Bilgic.
