Hatay's Final Four potential and the Stewart Show headline talking points

MUNICH (EuroLeague Women) - Week one of the new EuroLeague Women season is in the books and there was much to talk about after an entertaining and intriguing opening round of action.

Here are the top talking points of the week - according to our women's basketball specialist Paul Nilsen aka @Basketmedia365

Who actually posted the best performance?

I am finding it almost impossible to decide which club actually posted the best display. There were four standouts for me and only a wafer-thin element between all of them. Perhaps you could help me decide by voting for which of my quartet was the best. I am leaning towards handing the gong to Carolo Basket as they did make history.

Hatay the real deal for a Final Four spot?

Perhaps we are going overboard way too early on eyeing up Hatay as potential Final Four contenders. After all, it is only one week and one win. However, we did slate them as a top 3 team heading into the season and nothing has since changed my mind. Antakya is a notoriously difficult place to play which if they make the post-season, will be a factor. Having watched them tear past an Avenida side who are usually rock solid defensively, I was impressed. That performance by Courtney Paris was mesmeric and it's hard enough for opponents when she is going 12-of-13 from the floor, but having a hardened and talented partner like Glory Johnson makes them look capable of being a devastating and unstoppable force at times. It was also a team effort by the way - six players returning double-figure scores!

The Stewart Show

One thing is absolutely certain. EuroLeague Women as a competition has just had its potential global exposure ramped up higher than ever before now that Breanna Stewart has taken those magnificent first footsteps.  She brings an incredible worldwide interest and following as you would expect with her skills and list of 2018 gongs alone which include WNBA MVP, WNBA Finals MVP, #FIBAWWC MVP and so on.

She showed every aspect of her ability against TTT Riga although it did feel a little hollow for the simple fact that Kursk should probably have been bitten by their hosts and only escaped with that 1-point win. As for Stewart, this is going to be so much fun - and worth the wait!

No apology needed to Johannes

It was that kind of day for @marinej5 and @bourgesbasket 👌! #EuroLeagueWomen

The FIBA office received some feedback from unhappy fans of Marine Johannes after she was described as having had a mediocre/average FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Tenerife. Perhaps the point was missed that this was a measurement against her own impeccable standards. It was therefore with absolute glee that as we predicted, the French ace was back stuffing the highlights reel and in top gear. Great not only for Bourges fans and French supporters - but also lovers of the women's game in general.

Under the radar

Each week, I think I will need to finish by bringing you a list of things that might have slipped under the radar if you have only delved into the headlines. So, here goes.

- Castors Braine look like they have picked up a real gem in Karlie Samuelson, with the LA Sparks forward serving up a classy 18-point show that was lost in the wake of the Breanna Stewart and Alyssa Thomas debuts.

 - Another Great Britain player Temi Fagbenle had the misfortune of suffering a massive loss with CCC Polkowice and that overshadowed a super individual effort of 8-of-11 from the floor for  20 points.  She had a few highlights too!

- Watch  out for Iliana Rupert if you haven't already. An incredible talent, the 17-year-old French rising star made her EuroLeague Women debut with Bourges. A truly amazing prospect.

- Finally, Sheylani Peddy of TTT Riga wasted no time in setting a high tide mark for assists, reaching double-digits by passing the rock 10 times against Dynamo Kursk.
