History for Yakin Dogu Universitesi as curtain is raised on Regular Season

ISTANBUL (EuroLeague Women) - Yakin Dogu Universitesi stole the headlines on opening night of the EuroLeague Women Regular Season after taking their maiden win in the competition with their first attempt.

It wasn't easy as they had to come from behind to eventually outlast a hard-nosed Famila Schio side, 67-64, with Kayla McBride scoring 20 points and hitting the dagger triple down the stretch. There was also a big performance on the glass from Quanitra Hollingsworth, who had a priceless 16 boards and 3 blocked shots.

With new signing Dewanna Bonner not ready to suit up for ZVVZ USK Prague, the home fans might have been concerned ahead of their match-up with Tango Bourges Basket. However, Marta Xargay stepped up with 19 points and 7 assists, as well as the pivotal play, to facilitate a 64-61 success.

The EuroLeague Women reign of Roberto Iniguez started with a bang at Sopron Basket as they stunned Galatasaray with an eye-catching 72-55 victory. Aleksandra Crvendakic had 17 points and 8 rebounds.

Russian heavyweight duo UMMC Ekaterinburg and Dynamo Kursk both opened up with home wins. Brittney Griner was unstoppable for the former. She scored the first basket of the new EuroLeague Women season, going on to harvest 18 points in a 79-68 victory. Sonja Petrovic caught fire for Kursk with 26 points as they cruised past Castors Braine 84-68.

There was no luck for the competition's other Russian representative Nadezhda, as the short-handed side from Orenburg went down 67-61 in a fighting display at Fenerbahce.

Elsewhere, there was a captain's performance from veteran Johanne Gomis as she scored a team-high 13 points to inspire ESBVA-LM to a 65-60 comeback triumph against CCC Polkowice, while Perfumerias Avenida threw a defensive blanket over BLMA to complete a 64-34 victory.
