EuroLeague Women Week 1: The killer questions

MUNICH (EuroLeague Women) - As the curtain is raised on the brand new EuroLeague Women campaign, we take a look at some of the killer questions heading into the opening round of action.

We start with our game of the week between ZVVZ USK Prague and Tango Bourges, one of eight games on Wednesday you can watch live and for free via the FIBA YouTube channel. You can also follow every game day via our Live Updates.

ZVVZ USK Prague vs Tango Bourges Basket

Who will cope the best with the first page of a new chapter, following some big off-season changes for both clubs? Who will win the battle of the Spanish point guards in EuroLeague Women debutante Leticia Romero and Cristina Ouvina of Bourges? Or, will it be a case of Romero shutting down the dynamic Marine Johannes? Which frontcourt trio is better, Alena Hanusova, Amanda Zahui and Marija Rezan – or Katherine Plouffe, Elodie Godin and Alexia Chartereau?

UMMC vs Wisla Can-Pack

Can the visitors pull off what would potentially be the biggest upset of the week? Is it really true that playing an under-cooked and possibly under-strength UMMC early is the best thing – or is that just what opponents of the juggernauts tell themselves to feel better in a mismatch? Can Brittney Griner, Emma Meesseman and Lara Sanders form the best frontcourt partnership of the competition for the hosts?

Dynamo Kursk vs Castors Braine

Or, would this one be the biggest upset of opening week, if Braine could beat the defending champions? Can anybody guard Sonja Petrovic and Angel McCoughtry on the wings as this is a key area for Braine to focus on. Will Latvia national team ace Anete Steinberga be able to get the better of Dynamo Kursk pair Helena Ciak and Maria Vadeeva under the bucket?

Sopron Basket vs Galatasaray

Can these teams both think about making the post-season and having a shot at the Final Four because of their respective scoring power such as Yvonne Turner of Sopron and Allie Quigley of Galatasaray? On paper, is this the most balanced game of opening week? Is there a game with more exciting young guns such as Aleksandra Crvendakic, Angela Salvadores and Olivia Epopua? Is the Hungarian core stronger than the Turkish core of the non-domestic players, or is it seemingly well balanced?

Fenerbahce vs Nadezhda

After years of being a frontcourt-orientated team which played with real control, is this the start of a new ethos at Fenerbahce, led by their exciting new backcourt? Will the debutantes such as Kelsey Plum and Aerial Powers enjoy fruitful debuts in the competition? Can Nadezhda’s toughness be a factor and will they use their own 'bigs' to turn the tables on the hosts?

Yakin Dogu Universitesi vs Beretta Famila Schio

Are there two more exciting players to watch in the entire women's basketball world right now than playmaking genius Courtney Vandersloot who was outstanding in the SuperCup Women Final last week and the newly crowned WNBA champion, Cecilia Zandalasini of Schio? Can anyone on the visiting team truly slow down Vandersloot and is this a test of new play-caller Pierre Vincent and his heralded defensive philosophies against a free-scoring home team? Will Quanitra Hollingsworth and Isabelle Yacoubou be the most bruising and physical individual battle of any game?

ESBVA-LM vs CCC Polkowice

With both clubs having had some early worries domestically in the wake of disappointing results, could this be the most important match-up of the week from a psychological standpoint? Will home advantage and a strong team effort be the magical combination to unlock the win for Villeneuve? Or, will it come down to converting from outside via Johanne Gomis and Nevena Jovanovic? Can CCC Polkowice get contributions from players with something arguably to prove in this competition such as Elina Dikeoulakou and Artemis Spanou?

Perfumerias Avenida vs BLMA

In such a tough group and even if it is only the very first contest, is this a game that either club could regret losing in the final shake-up? With Anael Lardy and Fatimatou Sacko injured, will this impact adversely on BLMA or can they cope? Can Ewelina Kobryn head back to Salamanca and do some damage by getting the better of another veteran center in Erika Souza? Will the ‘Blue Tide’ get behind Avenida to such an extent that it might make BLMA crumble in the big moments?
