Dynamo Kursk start season with SuperCup Women victory
KURSK (SuperCup Women 2018) – Dynamo Kursk claimed the season-opening SuperCup trophy, defeating 2017 EuroCup Women champions Yakin Dogu Universitesi 84-73 on Thursday evening.
Played annually between the EuroCup Women and EuroLeague Women champions of the previous season, reigning EuroLeague Women champions Dynamo Kursk had to overcome a 43-40 half-time deficit, achieved through a mix of zone and man-to-man defense to start the third quarter.
Their cause was helped when Yakin Dogu's leading scorer of the first half, Quanitra Hollingsworth, entered foul trouble early in the third quarter, limiting her minutes and forcing the Turkish club to switch to four small players.
For Dynamo Kursk head coach Lucas Mondelo, the trophy was just the latest piece of silverware for him to add to an already sagging trophy cabinet. This year alone, the tactician has one FIBA EuroBasket Women gold with his native Spain, and of course the EuroLeague Women and SuperCup Women titles with Kursk.
The EuroLeague Women season tips off on October 11, with both Dynamo Kursk and Yakin Dogu Universitesi competing in the Regular Season. EuroCup Women tips off on the same night.
