Dynamo Kursk add to honors haul as they take SuperCup Women crown

KURSK (SuperCup Women) - EuroLeague Women champions Dynamo Kursk have another trophy in the cabinet after they outlasted Yakin Dogu Universitesi 84-73 to land the SuperCup Women title in front of their triumphant home fans.

Turning Point: In a fiercely competitive contest which saw little daylight between both clubs throughout and Yakin Dogu with a slender lead at the interval, Dynamo Kursk snapped it open down the stretch. Having edged 76-70 ahead, Angel McCoughtry effectively sealed the victory with an 'and-1' play with just over 90 seconds remaining. Making it a three-possession game, it proved a fatal blow.

Stats Don't Lie: The standout number by some distance was a massive 17 offensive rebounds for Dynamo Kursk, while they also impressed with just 7 turnovers in the contest.

Game Heroes: There are only a handful of players in the women's game that can improve the roster of a champion team like Dynamo Kursk. They went out and landed one in the shape of Sonja Petrovic and she delivered with a big double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Angel McCoughtry has only been on Russian soil a couple of days, but showed she is ready to shine again with 18 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.

The Bottom Line: Dynamo Kursk deserved to win on the basis they showed their champion spirit in crunch time with their big players coming up to decide this Final. They will be the team to beat in EuroLeague Women and credit to Lucas Mondelo as the Spanish play-caller adds yet another accolade to his lengthy and sparkling resume. To be able to bring Maria Vadeeva and McCoughtry off the bench tells you all about the quality Kursk have.

As for Yakin Dogu Universitesi, the EuroCup Women holders can look forward to their rookie EuroLeague Women season with relish. They have some great players and with WNBA Finalist, Jantel Lavender still to come, that should strengthen them further under the hoop. Any team with someone like Courtney Vandersloot pulling the strings will do well and she was unfortunate to be on the losing team, with a stellar 18 points and 10 assists.

They Said: "It was a tough game, Yakin Dogu are one of top teams in EuroLeague Women, they won everything last season. The first two quarters were like a boxing match, but then in the third we surprised them with a mix of zone and man-to-man, then (Quanitra) Hollingsworth got  into foul trouble and they had to play with four smalls. I am very happy for the club, city and also the staff" – Dynamo Kursk head coach Lucas Mondelo.
