Girona into Quarter-Finals after overtime classic

GIRONA (Spain) - It was a memorable night for Spar Citylift Girona as they ailed down their place in the EuroCup Women Quarter-Finals after edging an epic tie with KSC Szekszard.

Continuing where the first leg left off, which witnessed a last-gasp triple give Szekszard a six-point lead, both clubs produced a superb advert for the competition and the women's game, with another intense and absorbing battle.

In a gripping conclusion, the home side forced overtime as they moved ahead 73-67 at the end of regulation, before finishing the job in similarly nerve-shredding style to eventually ride out 80-73 winners.

In the process, Girona became the first club in the competition to reach the last eight, where they will be joined by the now former EuroLeague Women quartet of Nadezhda, Famila Schio, Perfumerias Avenida and Carolo Basket.

"We kept believing during all the game," said a triumphant and relieved Eric Suris, the Girona head coach.

"We had bad moments and we knew that KSC is a really hard team to beat, since they have a good balance between posts and wings.

"I want to highlight the mental strength of my team and I want to thank our fans. It was one of these magical nights in Fontajau - the magic came true in our gym and our fans could enjoy it."

He added: "With 3,500 people cheering for us, women's basketball in Girona is one of the top places.

"The next round is really difficult, it's going to be Quarter-Finals at the level of EuroLeague Women."

The rest of the EuroCup Women Round of 8 ties will see the last three tickets punched on Thursday night.
