Besiktas and Gorzow advance, Ndour shows out with monster double-double
MUNICH (EuroCup Women) - There was joy for Besiktas as they shrugged off a worrying start to the EuroCup Women Regular Season by taking a third straight win to advance from their group.
Having lost both of their opening games, things had looked bleak for the Istanbul side, but an upturn in fortune has culminated in them progressing after they strode past Inventa Kursk 94-64.
Nigerian Evelyn Akhator was a tower of strength inside as she amassed 24 points and 13 boards, while French guard Olivia Epoupa went 7 of 8 for 19 points.
Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje suffered a setback when they were beaten on their home floor 68-83 by Group A rivals Gorzow, who moved to 4-1 and guaranteed their spot in the next phase of the competition.
Belgium national team forward, Kyara Linskens was too much to handle as she posted 15 points and as many rebounds. She is now also looking forward to next week against Sodertalje and stated: "We are happy with the win. It was a difficult match that we prepared well for.
"We are already thinking about the next and last match, since a win will give us the first place in the group."
Artego Bydgoszcz set things up for an intriguing duel against Sparta&K on the last game day as they completed a one-sided 79-43 triumph against Sodertalje thanks mainly to 15 points and 15 rebounds from Dragana Stankovic.
MBA Moscow kept their flame burning in Group B as they smashed their way past Niki Lefkada 93-59 in a real team effort that witnessed four players returning double digits in points - including Russia national team player, Anna Leshkovtseva who harvested 17.
Cukurova Basketbol are having a flawless season and their potential as winners of the competition was emphatically underlined as they stormed past domestic rivals Botas Spor 84-63.
The win was fueled by Spanish ace Astou Ndour ,who netted a scintillating 32 points and added 12 rebounds. Alina Iagupova also scored 17 points and served up a sweet 14 assists.
Also in Group E, Bulgarian club Beroe prospered from a red-hot 32-point first quarter as they posted a 72-77 road win at A3 Umea, with Breanna Lewis shining with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
Finally in Group I, Lyon rolled their way to a 73-95 road win at VBW CEKK Cegled as Clarissa Dos Santos contributed a sparkling 24 points and Michelle Frances Plouffe handed out 10 assists.
Lyon will be one of several clubs looking to pick up a ticket and progress next week in what promises to be an exciting conclusion to the Regular Season.
