Roundup: Gernika land Devaughn and Yakin Dogu Universitesi dodge a bullet

GERNIKA (EuroLeague / EuroCup Women) – Alicia Devaughn will lead Lointek Gernika Bizkaia into their rookie EuroCup Women season, while Yakin Dogu Universitesi are almost upset on opening weekend in Turkey.

Devaughn drafted in by Gernika and Avenida show supremacy

With the arrival of Talia Caldwell delayed and with an injury to Amaya Gastaminza, Lointek Gernika Bizkaia have turned to Alicia Devaughn ahead of their EuroCup Women debut this week.

The powerhouse center brings previous experience of the competition from last season at Flammes Carolo Basket, although was not able to prevent her team slumping to a 75-68 Liga Feminina loss to Mann Filter Zaragoza over the weekend.

In the clash between Spain’s two leading clubs, it was Perfumerias Avenida who showed their EuroLeague Women class by outgunning Spar Citylift Girona 76-53, as Erika Souza claimed a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Heavyweights deliver knockout blows on opening weekend in Turkey

Reigning champions Yakin Dogu Universitesi recovered from their SuperCup Women disappointment at Dynamo Kursk to beat Botas, although they were made to sweat as they had to dig out a 51-48 win to avoid a major upset.

Fenerbahce turned the page in the summer and it was many of their new recruits who inspired an 83-65 win against Ormanspor. Kia Vaughn netted 19 points, Ana Dabovic and Kelsey Plum shared 28 points, while Tilbe Senyurek hauled down 13 rebounds.

Galatasaray also benefitted from a debutante as former Fenerbahce guard Alexandria Quigley erupted for 24 points and handed out 6 assists in her first game to lay the foundation for an 82-73 victory against Mersin.

Agu Spor stormed past Bornova 82-48 and the game will be remembered for a 17-point haul from Danielle Page as the naturalized Serbia forward returned from a long-term injury that saw her sidelined for the whole 206-17 season.

Besiktas were dealt a blow ahead of EuroCup Women this week by losing 78-69 at Cukorova, as were Istanbul Universitesi who were defeated 82-74 at Samsun.

No mistake by frontrunners in Russia

Reigning champions UMMC Ekaterinburg blasted their way past Enisey Krasnoyarsk 111-60 with Evgenia Belyakova and Alba Torrens scoring 23 and 21 points respectively.

Dynamo Kursk continued on from the high of their Super Cup Women triumph as Elena Kirillova drilled 18 points in an 80-54 win. It was Zhosselina Maiga who starred for Nadezhda with 18 points and 11 boards as they strode past MBA Moscow 82-58.

Elsewhere, EuroCup Women club Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje were disappointed to lose 68-59 at home to Inventa Kursk.

Thoburn shines as Nantes Reze come alive

There was a timely and eye-catching victory for Nantes Reze in the third round of the French League as they prepared for the start of EuroCup Women with a 75-68 success at Lyon. Canadian veteran Shona Thorburn led by example with 18 points.


There were also victories for two other French EuroCup Women participants as Flammes Carolo Basket won 85-45 at Nice as Clariss Dos Santos dropped 17 points and Amel Bouderra handed out 10 assists. Meanwhile Basket Landes cruised past Roche Vendee 76-59 behind 16 points and 10 boards from Cierra Bravard and 20 points from Miranda Ayim.

Saint-Amand won’t head into their EuroCup Women Regular Season opener on a high as they lost the derby match-up with ESBVA-LM 89-75, after being torched by former player Pauline Akonga who racked up 20 points.

ESBVA-LM are looking forward to tipping off their EuroLeague Women campaign – as are Tango Bourges, who smashed Mondeville 84-56 with Katherine Plouffe scoring 21 points. BLMA wrapped up an 84-72 home win against Tarbes as Giorgia Sottana and Courtney Hurt combined for 30 points.

Polish League problems for CCC Polkowice

CCC Polkowice have slumped to 1-3 in the Polish League after losing 92-80 at Artego Bydgoszcz after Denisha Stallworth scored 25 points and Julie McBride served up 14 assists for the joyous hosts.

Sharnee Zoll was the top performer for Sleza Wroclaw with 14 points and 11 assists in their 77-70 victory at home to Energa Torun.

There was a win for Wisla Can Pack against Ostrovia Ostrow and also for Gorzow who rode past Poznan 106-55, as the exciting Slovenian rising star Annamaria Prezelj scored 19 points.

Fields still on fire in Hungary

CMB Cargo Uni Gyor look to have made one of the signings of the summer as Canadian guard Nirra Fields continues to excel. She exploded for 26 points in a 94-70 win against Vasas.

Yvonne Turner’s 17 points carried Sopron Basket past ZTE 95-67, while Miskolc were handed a boost in their all-EuroCup Women clash as they outpaced VBW CEKK Cegled 85-81 on the road, with 16 points and 9 boards from Monica Engelman.

There was also joy for PINKK Pesci 424 as they won the derby match-up with PEAC-Pecs 77-72.

Close shave for Umana Reyer Venezia

Slovak Republic standout Marie Ruzicokova helped Umana Reyer Venezia win a tight one at Dike Napoli as her 12 points and 13 rebounds took them to a 51-48 triumph.

There were more comfortable wins for Beretta Famila Schio who defeated Fila San Martino 83-62 as Jolene Anderson starred with 19 points and also Passalacqua Ragusa, who had five players reach double-digits in a 70-56 home floor victory against Broni.
