Switzerland inflict first loss on Austria; Ireland, Norway prevail in overtime

MUNICH (Germany) - Switzerland ended the unbeaten start of Austria to the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Pre-Qualifiers with Ireland, Luxembourg and Norway also victorious in Sunday's action.

Only Romania remain unbeaten heading into the third and final window, with four spots still up for grabs after Austria's first defeat.

Switzerland now have control of Group A after recording an impressive 80-61 victory over the Austrians - claiming the head-to-head after a 16-point loss - with both teams now at 3-1. The hosts used a dominant 26-7 third period to pull away and round out a double-winning week in Fribourg.

Roberto Kovac top-scored with a game-high 18 points with Marco Portannese the only other player in double figures after netting 15 points off the bench with contributions spread out throughout the Swiss roster.

Meanwhile, Ireland ensured they stay in close proximity to the top two having battled to overcome Cyprus for an 83-75 victory in overtime in Dublin. The visitors rallied from 17 points down with a late basket from Zayd Muosa forcing the extra period, though they were unable to pull off a first win.

Ireland had five players scoring 11+ points with John Carroll posting 17 points and 11 rebounds. Taiwo Badmus added a double-double of 14 points and 12 boards with Jordan Blount finishing with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.

Luxembourg did pick up their first win, however, as they overturned an early nine-point deficit in beating Albania 86-75 in Group B. Clancy Rugg starred with a 33-point haul on 13-of-19 shooting to go with 13 rebounds to lead the way.

"We knew that we needed to stop their rhythm and we managed to do that," said Mihailo Andjelkovic. "We played extremely well together - Clancy Rugg played an amazing game and everybody did their job."

In Group C, Kosovo had looked set to make it a clean sweep for home sides on Sunday, but Norway battled back from a deficit of 17 points to claim an important 95-92 success in overtime as Harald Frey fired in 38 points.

Dardan Berisha had 27 points in vain for Kosovo, who drop to 1-2 as Norway take control of the wide-open group ahead of the final window.
