Sweden send Denmark packing, take the driver's seat in Group A

MALMO (Sweden) - Sweden took down their neighbors Denmark 79-74, covering the tiebreaker spread, meaning the Qualifiers are theirs for the taking, if they avoid a blowout defeat to Belarus on Sunday.

Turning point: Denmark took a 74-72 lead on a Gabriel Lundberg three-pointer with two minutes to play, but they scored just two more points the rest of the way. Viktor Gaddefors tied the score with a minute to go, then handed his team the lead after an Erik Rush steal and a Johan Lofberg assist.

Denmark still had the chance to protect their tiebreaker lead, but Nicholas Spires blocked both Lundberg and Chanan Colman's layup attempts, giving his team the chance to win the tie. Ludwig Hakanson and Rush stayed calm from the line to do so, getting the hosts a five-point lead.

Stats Don't Lie: It's all about making your shots, really. Denmark had 22 offensive rebounds, but it did not matter because they were only 24-of-71 from the field, nowhere near Sweden's 27-of-54 shooting clip. In such a close game, that was too big of a margin.

Game Hero: Johan Lofberg had 18 points, Alexander Lindqvist scored 13 in 11 minutes, Viktor Gaddefors finished with 15 after his late game heroics, but the game hero has to be Nicholas Spires. The towering center came up big with 3 blocks, two of them coming on the most important possession of the game.

Game Notes: With one game remaining in the group, Denmark are out of it at 2-2 and -2. Belarus could spoil Sweden's plans, but need to win by 29 or more points on Sunday. All other results take the Swedes through to the FIBA EuroBasket 2021 Qualifiers.

They Said: "It was a very do-or-die game for both teams. It's a big disappointment (to lose) in a game like this." - Adama Darbo, Denmark

"We are very disappointed. But we will try to take the good things from this game. I'm very proud of my players tonight and the way that we prepared for this game. We came here to play with no fear." - Erez Bittman, Denmark head coach

"It was a tough game and I'm just really happy that we won it. We knew that they were going to be tough, especially inside. Big bodies, a lot of rebounds; we're going to have to do that better in the future. All in all, I'm really proud of our guys." - Nicholas Spires, Sweden

"We got two great stops down the stretch. That put us in a good position, then we make our foul shots, but for the last one, and it gives us the opportunity to win this game." - Hugo Lopez, Sweden head coach
