Belgium remain perfect, dismantle shorthanded Iceland by 28

MONS (Belgium) - Dario Gjergja's reign at the helm of the Belgian national team is still of a perfect sort. Belgium have gone 4-0 in the FIBA EuroBasket 2021 Pre-Qualifiers Second Round, following a 90-62 win over Iceland.

Turning Point: Halftime team-talks. Iceland were hanging around, even though they were missing their two legends in Jon Arnor Stefansson and Hlynur Baeringsson, and the scoreboard showed 43-33 heading into the locker rooms. However, seems that Gjergja found the right recipe during the break, as Belgium won the second half by 18 points.

Stats Don't Lie: Everything went Belgium's way in this one - points from turnovers 20-3, fast-break points 11-4, second-chance points 18-7, points in the paint 42-26, bench points 45-21. It was a one-way street in Mons.

Game Hero: Ismael Bako started off the bench and collected 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and a steal in less than 20 minutes. Belgium were a +27 team with him on the floor.

Game Notes: Belgium already knew they would win the group, but going to the FIBA EuroBasket 2021 Qualifiers with a perfect record will be a morale booster for this pride of Lions. Iceland start over during the summer, playing the FIBA EuroBasket 2021 Pre-Qualifiers Third Round in August.

They Said: "Belgium earned the victory. They were the strongest team in the group and proved that today. After the first quarter, we slipped out of the match. They missed many players, but they have a lot of talent." - Craig Pedersen, Iceland head coach

"Belgium is large and physically strong. They have exploited that well today and achieved a great victory. We are having a generation change and must be ready this next summer." - Tryggvi Hlinason, Iceland

"With a four out of four to the FIBA EuroBasket 2021 Qualifiers. That's pretty nice from this group. For me, it was all new and I am happy that I have been able to work with this young group of players. The experienced players were also there for the previous window on the appointment. A nice selection with a bright future. We still have a lot of work, but the enthusiasm is there and we are going for a place at the FIBA EuroBasket 2021." - Dario Gjergja, Belgium head coach

"This group is very well connected and that's the strength of this selection. We have fun on and off the court, four victories in a row are beautiful, now we have to be ready for the next step. Believe in a fifth consecutive FIBA EuroBasket for Belgium. For me, it was also special to play in the Mons Arena, this is my hometown." - Alexandre Libert, Belgium
