Slovenia to fight like lions, Kokoskov promises

LJUBLJANA (FIBA EuroBasket 2017) – There were no major surprises when Slovenia playcaller Igor Kokoskov rolled out his training camp squad on Thursday afternoon, with Goran Dragic, Luka Doncic and a recently-added Anthony Randolph forming the core of what promises to be a medal contender at the FIBA EuroBasket 2017.

The coach revealed the lineup after narrowing down the initial 29-man selection to 18 players invited to the initial training camp in Zrece, set to begin on July 19, and the team's lead man Dragic, who will join his teammates at the start of August.

Slovenia reinforced their already talent-packed squad with some extra help last week by bringing in 27-year-old big man Randolph, who was teammates with the country's rising star Doncic this season at Real Madrid.

"It is a great honor to coach this team once again," said coach Kokoskov, who joined the team before last year's Qualifiers which Slovenia passed with flying colors, reaching the Final Round as one of only three undefeated teams.

The core that got Slovenia to FIBA EuroBasket 2017 will remain almost identical, with the likes of Klemen Prepelic, Gasper Vidmar, Edo Muric and Jaka Blazic heading into training camp as virtual locks to make the cut.

A pair of 20-year-old prospects in Vlatko Cancar, selected by the Denver Nuggets recently in the NBA Draft, and Zan Mark Sisko will also get a chance to work with the country's stars, as coach Kokoskov takes a future-oriented approach in inviting the duo to training camp.

"We will have a tough schedule this summer, so we will need to maximize our bench production and use all the help we can get when we go to Finland. This way, we can keep a high level of play throughout the tournament. It is important that the team functions as a unit and that we have real chemistry," he stressed.

Slovenia will be challenged by France, Greece, Iceland, Poland and the hosts Finland in Group A of FIBA EuroBasket. While admitting it is a tough draw, coach Kokoskov believes Slovenia are capable of getting to places as well.

"Our objectives are of the highest order and our first game against Poland will be a key one on the way to Istanbul. We will also play an extremely strong French team and the unfavorable Greece. We are not underestimating anyone, but at the same time we're not afraid of anyone either and we will fight like lions in every single game," the coach promised.

Slovenia will entertain the national teams of Russia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Croatia, Ukraine, Israel and Turkey throughout the preparation period, playing friendly games both in Slovenia and in tournaments abroad.

Coach Kokoskov's side will play their first FIBA EuroBasket 2017 game against Poland on August 31.
