Germany aim to carry last summer's positive momentum into FIBA EuroBasket 2017

MUNICH (FIBA EuroBasket 2017) - If there's one aspect to Germany's successful FIBA EuroBasket 2017 qualifying campaign that bodes well for the future, it was the team's "one-for-all and all-for-one" spirit.

The team stuck together through good times and bad and the result was a spot in both FIBA EuroBasket 2017 and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers.

That much was evident in interviews by Danilo Barthel and Bastian Doreth with the German Basketball Federation website.

"We were a close unit," power forward Barthel said. "All those who have stood on the court have fought for us to qualify for EuroBasket."

Barthel has stressed the importance of continuity for Germany

Another who embodied the fighting spirit and team-first ethos was Doreth, who served as a co-captain with Robin Benzing.

"We had to learn to deal with the pressures we undoubtedly had," Doreth said. "In this respect, my role was above all to help the guys off the court. That was very interesting for me to learn. On the court, we had Robin and Danilo, others who set the bar."

Germany definitely had pressure. Their qualification hopes hung in the balance after a home defeat to the Netherlands and a road loss at Denmark. Germany rebounded with impressive victories over a visiting Austria and at the Dutch in their last couple of games to clinch first place in their group.

Barthel, 25, was not long removed from helping Fraport Skyliners win the FIBA Europe Cup. He averaged 10.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for the national team.

Barthel says that same attitude and sense of togetherness needs to prevail if Germany are going to be successful.

"There have been quite a few changes in the national team in recent years," he said. "It is important for everyone to have the team spirit."

I think that if we manage to develop a passion as a group, then this year there is a lot in it.DorethDoreth

Germany will be at the FIBA EuroBasket this summer in Group B, in Tel Aviv, and will face Ukraine, Italy, Lithuania, Georgia and hosts Israel. Then in November, the Germans will launch their FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers campaign at home to Georgia and away to a side that emerges from the World Cup European Pre-Qualifiers.

"It is important that the core remains together, that creates continuity," Barthel said. "This will be far more extreme in the coming years. With the (World Cup) Qualifying windows, you have even less preparation time for the games."

Co-captain Doreth embraced his role with Germany in 2016

Doreth, a 28-year-old star with Medi Bayreuth, likes Germany's chances of doing well in Israel.

"I think that if we manage to develop a passion as a group, then this year there is a lot in it," he said. "With Dennis (Schroder), everything is possible, but we other players can not hide behind names. It gives us a huge push that Dennis is there, but we must of course support him as a team. Then we will see how far we go."

As far as Doreth is concerned, he's champing at the bit to be a part of the team again.

"The national team for me means the pure pride of being allowed to represent my country," he said. "As a sportsman, there is nothing greater than to play for the national team. This is personal pride for me."
