Executive Committee brought up to speed on Mid-Term Congress and preparations for FIBA Competition System 2017+

MIES, Switzerland - FIBA's Executive Committee convened a meeting on Saturday March 18 during which it shared information across a wide range of topics.

Mid-Term Congress
The Executive Committee received an update on the Mid-Term Congress set to take place on Thursday-Friday May 4-5 in Hong Kong. The two-day event will include workshops addressing the themes of National Federations Development, FIBA Competition System 2017+, 3x3, as well as Broadcast- and Media-related matters.

FIBA Competition System 2017+
The Executive Committee heard about the most recent developments in the lead-up to the FIBA Competition System 2017+ being launched later this year. This included a review of the hugely successful four regional FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers Marketing and Communication workshops that recently took place in MunichBeirutSanto Domingo and Abidjan.

As a follow-up to these workshops, webinars on marketing and communication aspects of the Qualifiers for China 2019 are set to come into place.

Meanwhile, work is ongoing to get all necessary officials - such as technical delegates, statisticians and table officials - ready for the tip-off in November 2017.

Draw for FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers
Preparations are underway for the Draw of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers. It will take place in Guangzhou - one of the eight Chinese cities that will organise and host FIBA's flagship event - on Sunday May 7. The timing has been arranged in such a way that delegates attending the Mid-Term Congress earlier in the week can follow that up by witnessing this major milestone on the Road to China 2019.

FIBA 3x3
Following the Central Board's approval, the Executive Committee took note of the formal request sent at the end of February to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to include 3x3 as part of the Olympic Basketball program at the Tokyo 2020 Games. A decision by the IOC as to whether or not the discipline will be included is expected during the summer.

Basketball Champions League
A report from the Basketball Champions League Board was presented to the Executive Committee. The competition, the product of an innovative 50-50 joint partnership between FIBA and 10 top European leagues, was praised for its success in its inaugural season.

Women's basketball
In light of the creation and successful implementation of FIBA's Competition System 2017+ that opens a new era for the men’s game, the Executive Committee held productive conversations as it looks to move forward in finding a similar calendar and competition system that will enhance the women’s game.

Jose Luis Saez
The Executive Committee accepted the resignation of its member, Mr Jose Luis Saez, and thanked him for his contributions over the past decade. This also includes him stepping down as a member of FIBA's Central Board.
