Paris to play host to FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup 2021

PARIS (France) - The seventh edition of the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup will be held in Paris, France on September 10-12, 2021.

This will mark the first time France stages the competition. France is no stranger to big international 3x3 events though: the FIBA 3x3 World Cup was set in Nantes back in 2017.

The event will be organized by the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) on Parvis de la Défense, a very iconic square in the financial district of Paris, which offers a unique view on the French capital and its other scenic landmarks like Arc de Triomphe.

The FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup will come to Paris, just 1 year after its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games and just 3 years before its second appearance at the Paris 2024 Games.

"It is with great pleasure that FIBA brings the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup for the first time in France," FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said.

"This is the perfect place to be for 3x3 as our young urban discipline builds up on its first Olympic appearance, which – we have no doubt – will be a tremendous success. This should be a first taste of the international stars of 3x3 for the French audience before the Paris 2024 Games."

France have been a trailblazer in the development of 3x3 and have found great success in the discipline with 4 medals in the first-ever edition of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup back in 2012. The French women’s national team is the reigning European champion.

"I am particularly happy that FIBA has selected us to host one of the major events on the 3x3 scene, just after the Tokyo Games," FFBB President Jean-Pierre Siutat said.

"This validates all the work FFBB has accomplished to develop the practice of 3x3 in France. I am also delighted that this event takes place in an iconic location like La Défense. This fits perfectly with the dynamic and innovative spirit of an urban discipline like 3x3. With such setting, all the ingredients are there for the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup make a lasting impression 3 years before the Paris Games."

Twelve men's teams and 12 women's teams will compete in Paris over 3 days. They will qualify through a series of qualifiers, held in 2021, in locations to be announced at a later stage.

France’s women and Serbia’s men are the reigning European champions after their masterpiece performance in Bucharest, Romania on September 14-16, 2018.

The FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup will be held in Debrecen, Hungary in 2019 and Antwerp, Belgium in 2020.

ABOUT FIBA 3x3

Exciting, urban and innovative, 3x3 is inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide and is considered the world’s number one urban team sport. Steered by FIBA, games see two teams of three players face off on a basketball half-court.

It was played successfully for the first time in international competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and since then has benefited from the launch of a yearly city-based FIBA 3x3 World Tour and national-team FIBA 3x3 World & Continental Cups. On June 9, 2017, 3x3 was added to the Olympic Program, starting from the Tokyo 2020 Games.
