Mexico, Dominican Republic and the host celebrate wins on opening day

MANATI (FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2019) – The National Teams from Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico captured convincing wins on the first day of the Centrobasket Women’s Championship 2018.

Mexico opened the 2018 edition of the Centrobasket Championship with a 77-42 win over Costa Rica. The Mexicans dominated from the get-go with a 23-7 first quarter. Jacqueline Luna led the Mexican offense with 16 points. Ana Matamoros led the scoring for Costa Rica with 15 points.

The host of the Centrobasket Women’s Championship began their participation on the regional competition with a commanding 95-50 victory over Bahamas. The Boricuas set the tone and the rhythm of the game from the start to escape to a 30-10 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes of the game. The team coached by Jerry Batista never looked back and celebrated the win. Allison Gibson led the scoring for Puerto Rico with 12 points.

The Dominican Republic captured its first win of the Centrobasket Women’s Championship over Guatemala. The Dominicans dominated from the start and never looked back. With a variant offensive the Caribbean secured the win.

Tomorrow on the second day of the Centrobasket Championship, Mexico will face Bahamas, Costa Rica will take-on Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic will face Cuba.

The top four teams from the Centrobasket Women’s Championship 2018 will qualify to the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2019.
