Centrobasket tips off with wins for Mexico, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands

ST THOMAS (Women's Centrobasket Championship 2017) - The first day of the Women's Centrobasket Championship 2017 saw victories for Mexico, Puerto Rico and host Virgin Islands.

Mexico started its Centrobasket campaign with a 61-56 win over Bahamas. Mexico had an energetic start that translated to a 23-10 first quarter. Mexico's energy and efficiency dropped, and Bahamas started to discount from the difference with points from the paint. Bahamas won all the remaining quarter by slight margins, which allowed Mexico to kept the lead on the scoreboard for the win. Jacqueline Luna was the top performer for Mexico with 10 points and 9 rebounds, for a +19 efficiency.

Puerto Rico captured its first win of the Women's Centrobasket Championship with a dominant 90-44 performance over Jamaica. The Boricuas entered the game and created a 21-12 first quarter with efficiency from the field and dominance on the paint. Jerry Batista’s team won all the quarters, and captured the win, while shooting for a 47% from the field and racking-up 21 assists. Returning Pamela Rosado was the top performer for the Puerto Ricans with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.

The host of the Women’s Centrobasket Championship debuted on the competition with a powerful and convincing 82-58 win over Guatemala. The team from the Virgin Islands won the first half, but it was in the last quarter that the team coached by William Colon stepped in the pedal to secure the win, with a 24-12 quarter. Virgin Islands dominated the boards 49-37. The top performer for the Virgin Islands was Natalie Day with a 21-point and 17-rebound double-double.

The second day will see Bahamas take on Jamaica, Guatemala face Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands take on Mexico.

The top three teams from the Women's Centrobasket Championship will qualify for the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2017.
