Strong presence of BCL Americas' players in the AmeriCup qualifiers

MIAMI (United States) – The 2022 AmeriCup's qualifiers had a new window in the continent, and the different national teams had a considerable participation of players (22 in total) who are playing in the BCL Americas' second edition. Here is a review of their performances, country by country.

ARGENTINA
The national team coached by Gabriel Piccato had its participation in the bubble of Cali, Colombia, with one victory and one defeat. First, it won 99-65 against Chile, and then it lost 71-63 against Colombia. In this window, it had five representatives who are playing in the BCL Americas' second edition, with José Vildoza and Máximo Fjellerup (San Lorenzo), Fernando Zurbriggen and Lautaro Berra (Obras Sanitarias), and Franco Baralle (Quimsa). The point guard from the "Ciclón" was the highlight, with an average of 12 points and 5 assists between both matches, whereas Fjellerup played well against Chile, with 13 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists, but he was injured and could not play the second match. Zurbriggen had averages of 3.5 points and 4.5 rebounds, whereas Berra averaged 5 points. Baralle, on his end, had good minutes and an average of 4.5 points.

VENEZUELA
Fernando Duró's team achieved two valuable victories which sealed its qualification to the AmeriCup. The BCL Americas representative was pivot Néstor Colmenares, who plays for Instituto de Córdoba. He was Venezuela's MVP, averaging 18 points, 13.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Colmenares was the leader in his country’s qualification after defeating Colombia, the locals, 80-67 and Chile 61-44.

CHILE
Universidad de Concepción is the Chilean team in the current BCL Americas' edition, and it gave three players to the team lead by Argentine Cristian Santander. They’re Diego Silva, Carlos Lauler and Sebastián Carrasco. The first one, undisputed starter in the team, averaged 7.5 points and 2.5 assists in the defeats against Argentina (99-65) and Venezuela (61-44). Lauler was a good replacement with an average of 3.5 points, and Carrasco’s was 4 points.

COLOMBIA
The Colombian team made history defeating Argentina (71-63) for the first time and reaching the AmeriCup, after losing against Venezuela (80-67). The team had three representatives from Titanes de Barranquilla, the Colombian team representing its country in the BCL Americas. Juan Diego Tello was part of the starting team in both matches and he averaged 11.5 points and 8.5 rebounds, becoming a fundamental piece for the qualification. In turn, Hanner Mosquera had an average of 2 points, and Gianluca Bacci scored 3 points in the first game, and had one rebound and one assist in the second one.

BAHAMAS
David Nesbitt is an emblematic player of Bahamas' national team, and one of the pillars of Minas Tenis, one of the Brazilian teams playing the BCL Americas. He averaged 13.5 points, 6 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

PANAMA
It was one of the teams with the biggest representations from the BCL Americas. In the match where it beat Uruguay 77-71, it had 7 players: 6 from Caballos de Coclé and one from Quimsa from Santiago del Estero, the latest champion. The Panamanian team gave them Eugenio Luzcando (4 points), Josimar Ayarza (6), Michael Hicks (13), Ernesto Oglivie (10), José Lloreda (6), Adalberto Rojas (0) and Carlos Rodríguez (0), whereas Trevor Gaskins, one of Quimsa's stars, was one of the highlights with 17 points.

URUGUAY
Rubén Magnano's national team won 88-84 against Paraguay and it then fell in the abovementioned match against Panama, and it became the leader of Group B. Both representatives from the BCL Americas were from Obras Sanitarias, and they were both in the starting lineup: Joaquín Rodríguez and Emiliano Serres. The first one averaged 11 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists, whereas Serres had an average of 6 points and 4.5 rebounds.
