Three tickets up for grabs: Which teams can qualify on Monday?

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - After the results on the first gameday in Window 4 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Asian Qualifiers, three teams are in position to claim their tickets to the big dance next year.

The top three teams in each of the two groups will advance to Indonesia, Philippines and Japan for a total of 8 teams from Asia and Oceania at the World Cup including co-hosts Japan and the Philippines. Each team will play six games in the Second Round as they add to their First Round results, where applicable.

There have been some solid performances from the remaining teams in the Second Round and a couple of undefeated teams still have their perfect records intact and three teams can mathematically advance from this window.

One of those teams are World Cup 2019 Semi-Finalist and Olympic bronze medalists, Australia. The Boomers have not yet lost in the Asian Qualifiers and if they can stay undefeated, there's a scenario where they can qualify for the World Cup next year.

Meanwhile, the other undefeated team, New Zealand, can also prepare for their World Cup appearance next year - if the results on August 29 go their way. Similarly, the in-form Lebanon national team are also in position to celebrate their first World Cup appearance since 2010 depending on the outcomes of the last games in Window 4.

Australia might have the tougher game to close out this window among the three teams as they will be hosting Iran. The two teams had faced each other in the World Cup 2019 Qualifiers, splitting wins on each other's home venues and also faced each other in the Asia Cup 2017 Final. The Boomers will hold homecourt advantage in this first matchup between the two in the 2013 Asian Qualifiers.

The Tall Blacks have a tough task of facing Jordan in an Asia Cup Third-Place Game rematch. At their best, Jordan can beat any team in the playing field which New Zealand are well aware of after their battle to the final minutes in Jakarta last month. An advantage for New Zealand in this game is that they’ll be playing at their home in Auckland.

Meanwhile, Lebanon will also be playing against an opponent they beat at the recent Asia Cup, India. This will be the first game at home for India in a long while, which means it might be a tougher game than expected for the Cedars.
