World Cup champions Spain receive heroes' welcome in Madrid

MADRID (Spain) - World champions Spain were feted as heroes back home after returning from their conquest at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in China.

The national team was granted an official reception at the Zarzuela palace with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.

It was then hailed by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at the Palacio de la Moncloa.

"It's been an honor to have you here," Sanchez said. "Thank you for bringing enthusiasm to a country and it makes you enjoy basketball. Thanks to the team for taking the Spanish colors to the highest level."

Spain's players, coaches and staff then boarded an open-top bus for a triumphant procession to the Plaza de Colon, where thousands of delirious fans greeted them.

Among those to speak to the throng of supporters was Rudy Fernandez, who like teammate Marc Gasol won the world title in Japan 13 years ago.

"I want to thank all the players for helping me, for making this summer so special and for giving me the joy of lifting the Cup," Fernandez said.

Spain coach Sergio Scariolo, who was thrown into the air in celebration by his players, told the fans: "You want to know why this team are champions? Because it never gave up, even when things looked ugly.

"To give up was never an option. Until the heart gave them strength, the brain found a resource to continue and win games. They deserve to be world champions."

Sergio Llull paid tribute to the players that didn't make the team but were pivotal in helping Spain during the European Qualifiers.

He said: "A special mention goes to the players that play the qualifying windows, a piece of this medal is theirs."

Gasol asked the fans to support the national team at all times.

"When the day comes, whenever that is and we don't win, also support us," he said.
