Brothers teaming up in World Cup Qualifiers

MIES (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers) - Playing for your country in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers has a special feeling. But representing your homeland alongside your brother takes that experience to another level.

Here are some of the brothers who have played together over the course of the first two Qualifiers windows as part of their respective country's journey on the Road to China 2019.

Mohamed and Bechir Hadidane - Tunisia



Tunisia fans know the name Hadidane well as Mohamed has been playing for the country for more than a decade. And he was a big leader for Tunisia in the November window with 11.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists. The 31-year-old also came up with a big block in the final minute of the team's 67-66 win over Cameroon. Bechir, the older of the two at age 33, has averaged 5.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists.

Corey and Tai Webster - New Zealand



New Zealand had two sets of brothers on the team in February with Isaac and Dan Fotu and Corey and Tai Webster. While Dan Fotu still needs time to become a regular fixture on the team, both Websters are real leaders for the Tall Blacks. Corey, 29, leads the team in scoring at 19.0 points per game to go with 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds. And the 22-year-old Tai is averaging 10.0 points, a team-high 5.5 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.0 steals.

Dimitrii and Mikhail Kulagin - Russia



Dimitrii Kulagin is serving as a good example for his younger brother Mikhail to follow with the Russian national team. The 25-year-old Dimitrii is averaging 10.3 points, 5.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals through the first four games while Mikhail, 23, contributed 8.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals in the November games.

Heo Hoon and Heo Ung - Korea



The Korean national team is a family affair as brothers Heo Hoon and Heo Ung - both 22 - played in the first two windows - for none other than their father, head coach Hur Jae. Heo Hoon is averaging 5.5 points, 1.3 assists and 0.8 rebounds while Heo Ung has picked up 3.0 points and 1.0 rebounds.

Ermelindo and Orlando Novela - Mozambique



Mozambique have the 27-year-old twins Ermelindo and Orlando Novela. In the February window, Ermelindo averaged 4.7 points, 1.7 steals, 1.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists while Orlando went scoreless but chipped in 2.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals.

Mateusz and Marcel Ponitka - Poland



Mateusz Ponitka has been playing for the Polish senior national team since 2012 when he was an 18-year-old. Through the first two windows, he is leading the team in scoring (13.8 points) and rebounding (6.3 rebounds). In February, Mateusz saw his 20-year-old brother Marcel make his senior national debut - and the younger Pontika collected 5 points, 1 rebound and 1 steal in 10 minutes over two games. 

Isaac and Dan Fotu - New Zealand



New Zealand already had the Webster brothers Corey and Tai and then in the February window, the Fotu brothers joined the list when star big man Isaac Fotu (12.5 points and 6.0 rebounds) looked on from the bench against Korea as his 18-year-old brother Dan Fotu played the final nine seconds.

"It was definitely a cool moment watching my brother get on the court for the national team for the first time. I was definitely very proud of him," Isaac Fotu said.

Viktor and Anton Gaddefors - Sweden



The younger brother Viktor Gaddefors, 25, has played in both windows for Sweden - and averaged 7.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Meanwhile 28-year-old Anton contributed 2.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in the November 2017 window.

Joji and Kosuke Takeuchi - Japan



Japan still are using their 33-year-old twins Joji and Kosuke Takeuchi. The former played in both windows and averaged 2.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 19 minutes a game. Kosuke has featured in one game, grabbing 1 rebound in 7 minutes against Australia in the November window.

Luca and Michele Vitali - Italy



Luca Vitali, 31, has been a staple of the Italian national team and he played well in the first two windows, averaging 4.8 points. 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists. In February, he was joined by his 26-year-old brother Michele Vitali, who was playing for the senior team for the first time since the FIBA EuroBasket 2015 Qualifiers. Michele showed he belonged with 8.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals in the second window.

FIBA
