Schroder breaks World Cup Qualifiers assist record in Germany comeback

LEIPZIG (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers) - Germany point guard Dennis Schroder on Sunday set a new FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers record for most assists in a single game with his inspiring play in Leipzig.

The star playmaker dished out 13 assists - while also scoring 30 points - in leading Germany to 112-98 come-from-behind overtime victory over Israel, helping the home side fight back from 23 points down to win and thereby book their ticket to the World Cup with games to spare.

The 6ft 1in (1.85m) guard - who celebrated his 25th birthday on Saturday - did turn the ball over 7 times but also played 43:10 minutes and his importance was not lost on Germany head coach Henrik Rodl.

"At times he didn't make some good decisions, like everyone else. But we don't need to talk about that. We wouldn't have had a chance without him to get back into the game," Rodl said. "He's the leader. He talks so much with the guys. He was very positive. He played how many minutes … crazy. In the end, he left everything on the court."

Thanks to Schroder's 13 assists, which included a magical inbounds pass to Maxi Kleber for a layup at the buzzer of regulation to force overtime, Germany improved to 8-0 in Group L - tied for first place along with Greece.

The Schroder mark surpassed the 12 assists by Asnal Alain Noubaramadje of Chad against Guinea last November 26 in the first window of the Africa Qualifiers.

Through four games in the European Qualifiers, Schroder is averaging 23.5 points, 7.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds.
