Bochoridis: National anthem waking up "intense, unique feelings" in Greece

ATHENS (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers) - Greece are one of only six unbeaten teams in this campaign, but Lefteris Bochoridis knows that their work is not done yet.

With all the First Round results being carried over to the Second Round, Ellada could make a gigantic leap towards the summit if they finish on a 6-0 record. All it takes are wins away in Israel on Thursday, and in Estonia on Monday. But the players are not thinking about China 2019 yet.

"I don't think there is anybody thinking about it. We just enter the court and play, and if we can make it (to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019), it will be a pleasure for everyone who gets into the final roster," Bochoridis said before the last two games of the First Round.

The lefty guard was once dubbed as "the next Diamantidis," and his season with Aris showed glimpses of his potential. He averaged 10.8 points per game in the Greek League, and had back-to-back games with 20+ points against Panionios and Rethymno Cretan Kings.

The 24-year-old was even voted Basketball Champions League Gameday 8 MVP after his 22-point, 9-assist outburst against Stelmet Enea Zielona Gora in Poland. Impressive club season will serve as motivation for the national team.

"Personally, whenever I was given the opportunity to play for the national team, I believed that it was a great honor. I will always believe that," Bochoridis explained.

"In the national team, we all serve our country, we give our best. Every time I hear the national anthem, it gives me a very intense feeling. In those moments, all that I've passed with youth teams, all the moments I had with the national team, they come across like a movie. It is really intense and unique."

Bochoridis is well aware that Greece will look a bit different if they book a flight to China. But still, he doesn't feel like the players who are unavailable right now should be judged.

"It is very unfair to consider that somebody has turned their back on the team. This is something that cannot be controlled by the players sometimes, and they shouldn't be punished for that. So it makes sense to count on them for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 final roster. This is the right thing, in such a big event, those who deserve it must be there, in order to bring what is best for our country," Lefteris said, before explaining his part with the team.

"I would be bitter if I'm not in China. But only if I believed that I deserve to be there. All the players have their egos, and it's a lifetime dream to play with the national team in a big event."

Being a part of this process in Greece was a unique experience for Bochoridis. Witnessing greatness from inside the locker-room, he now knows who to look up to as his career goes on and on.

"PERSONALLY, WHENEVER I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY FOR THE NATIONAL TEAM, I BELIEVED THAT IT WAS A GREAT HONOR. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE THAT."Bochoridis

"I was impressed by Ioannis Bourousis and Panagiotis Vasilopoulos, and their attitude in the last two Qualifying Windows. Two guys, who have been in the forefront for so many years, but continue to faithfully serve the idea of the national team. These are role models for young children, who want to know about the importance of the national team."

This campaign gave Bochoridis a chance to learn. After seeing it all first-hand, maybe he'll will be the one teaching in years to come.
