MELBOURNE (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers) - Australia may be unbeaten so far, but point guard Jason Cadee knows the Philippines may prove to be a tough challenge in the second window.
"We have obviously seen the Philippines play at the FIBA Asia Cup 2017, and our coaches will have their games from the last window," Cadee said. "We know they are a talented group and will play hard. Should be good fun."
The Boomers will play Gilas Pilipinas aiming for their third win in as many games. The Australians outclassed Chinese Taipei, 104-66, in their first Asian Qualifiers fixture and then blew Japan out, 82-58, to close out the first window. They remain heavy favorites against the Philippines, especially as Australia are set to play at home in front of their energetic fans. Cadee sees this as a golden opportunity, since Australian hoop nuts don't usually see their national team play at home.
"I think it’s awesome the fans get to see more games, and they aren’t just friendly games," Cadee said. "These games shape the World Cup and teams are bringing the best they have. I know we loved playing in Adelaide and can’t wait to have 2 home games in Melbourne!"
After hosting the Filipinos, the Boomers will once again face Taipei and have a shot at securing a berth in the next round if they sweep both these matches. Despite his team's superior size and skill-level, though, Cadee believes they cannot look past any opponent.
"Everyone is a challenge for us, and we look at all teams in high regard and with a lot of respect," he explained. "It doesn't matter who we play. We go about it the same way. That’s what got us a gold medal in Beirut and hopefully will be the reason we continue to win throughout these qualifications."
