MONTEVIDEO - FIBA's New Competition System is getting closer and excitement is beginning to build for the changes that are about to arrive.
Marcelo Signorelli, the coach of the Uruguayan national team, has been in that position for just over a year and has made clear his impressions on the changes that may come with the new international calendar.
"I consider the new system a very positive move, since now international activity will not be focused on a single tournament, but in a period of two years," said Signorelli, who led Uruguay to the bronze medal at the 2016 South American Championship.
"This system will allow the fans to enjoy and accompany their national team in official matches. It is always good to play at home and in front of your people. That, in addition, will help the promotion of basketball in each country," added Signorelli.
Starting on November, 16 teams from the Americas will compete in regular home and away qualifying games to the FIBA Basketball World Cup in China.
The increase of official matches is something positive for Signorelli, as he admits that will mean great new opportunities for national players.
"There will be more frequent contact with players, especially those who play abroad. For the players, it will open more chances to defend their national team, to be in the group. It is very positive that the national teams have more activity, "said Signorelli.
The qualifying windows for the FIBA World Basketball Cup 2019 will be November 20-28, February 19-27 (2018), June 25 to July 3, September 10-18, November 26 to December 4, and February 20-28 (2019).
"We will have more work of organizing and planning of practices and preparation camps, something that until now was done once a year. In addition, it will be necessary to keep a permanent follow-up of the actuality of the possible players. I am excited that my task will extend throughout the year," concluded the coach.
Uruguay were drawn into Group A with Argentina, Paraguay and Panama for the First Round of World Cup Qualifiers. Their first two games will be at home against Panama on November 23 and then in Paraguay on November 26.
