How teams clinch spots, or stay in hunt, for Second Round of African Qualifiers
MIES (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers) - Cairo, Tunis, Dakar, and Lagos are the places to keep an eye on over the next few days if you are keen on African basketball! So far, Tunisia, Cameroon, and Nigeria are the only teams qualified for the Second Round.
While it’s important to remember that the top three teams in each of the four groups will progress to the Second Round, it bears repeating that teams need to win as many games as they can since all results carry over.
The third window is even more exciting with every team still having a chance to progress!
Tunisia have sealed their place in the Second Round.
Cameroon have sealed their place in the Second Round.
Chad can advance to the Second Round with two wins. If Chad fall to Tunisia on Saturday, their clash with Guinea would be a do-or-die game to determine which of the two advances.
Guinea fate is tied to Chad's result: in order to have a decider game against Chad, they must at least match their result in the first game (if Chad beat Tunisia, Guinea must defeat Cameroon).
Nigeria have sealed their place in the Second Round.
Rwanda need two wins to be assured of advancing although one win might be enough depending on other results and points difference. They will still qualify by losing both games if Uganda win their two remaining games.
Mali need two wins to be assured of advancing although one win might be enough depending on other results and points difference.
Uganda's destiny is in their own hands as they will be assured of advancing by winning two games. One victory might be enough depending on other results and points difference.
Angola are in a strong position to advance with one win in their remaining games good enough to seal their Second Round place. They can only finish fourth if they lose both games, coupled with a win for Democratic Republic of Congo over Morocco and a triumph for Morocco over Egypt (it will depend on point difference).
A win against Angola for Egypt might not be enough to qualify for the Second Round. Even if they lose against Angola, Egypt will qualify if they beat Morocco.
Morocco will seal their place in the Second Round with a win against Democratic Republic of Congo.
Democratic Republic of Congo need at least one win in their last two games to have a chance of advancing. If they lose to Morocco, they can still advance if Egypt lose both of their games.
Senegal are in a strong position to advance with one win in their remaining games good enough to seal their Second Round place. They can only finish fourth if they lose both games while Central African Republic win both of theirs (it will depend on points difference).
Even if Cote D'Ivoire beat Senegal on Saturday, it may not be enough to advance to the Second Round if, in the meantime, Central African Republic defeat Mozambique. If Cote D'Ivoire were to lose their second game against Central African Republic and Mozambique were to beat Senegal, it would depend on points difference.
Mozambique are 100% in the Second Round if they beat Central African Republic on Saturday.
Central African Republic need at least one win in their last two games to have a chance of advancing. If they lose to Mozambique, they can still advance if Cote D'Ivoire lose both of their games.
