Enabu comes of age as Uganda dreams of World Cup debut

KAMPALA (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers) - Since making a debut appearance at the FIBA AfroBasket in 2015, Uganda has made great strides at the continental level and find themselves flying even higher than their critics thought they would go.

At the heart of this progress is shooting guard Jimmy Enabu whose determination, hunger for success and a profound yearning to join the high table has seen him dig deep to produce perfomances that have given birth to a new dream.

That Uganda has never qualified for the FIBA Basketball World Cup will not at any one time deter this new objective. If anything, it will inspire.

The 29-year old Enabu, who averaged 18.0 points after three games in Group B over the weekend, sits just below fellow teammate Robinson Odoch Opong who averaged 21.0 points per game across all the four groups partaking in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers.

"UGANDA WILL MAKE SOME ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD IN JUNE SO AS TO MAXIMIZE THE TEAM'S POTENTIAL IN THE THIRD WINDOW.”- Santur

"It is realistic for us to say that we can qualify for the World Cup. The chances are realistic. There are cinderalla stories. You never know, we could get lucky. We shall definitely work towards that and I think it is possible," Enabu told FIBA.basketball in an exclusive interview.

The Silverbacks currently sit second in Group B tied on four points with Mali and Rwanda occupying third and fourth separated by goal difference.

Nigeria lead the table standings with six points following three wins out of three games with Uganda coming close to challenging the 2015 African champions losing in their opener 102-86

Uganda suffered a heartbreak following a buzzer beater losing to Mali 79-76 but the Silverbacks believe that there is still a lot to play for.

It is the way they approached their last tie against Rwanda that shows their determination at this stage winning 79-63 to improve their record to 4-2 in the East African derby since 2009.

Silverbacks General Manager Mohammed Santur revealed that "Uganda will make some additions to the squad in June so as to maximize the team's potential in the third window where the East African outfit is looking to proceed to the second round."

Enabu looks back at how far Uganda has come since 2015 and where they are now and feels that this has come down to the high level management of the team thus far.

The Silverbacks go into the second window eyeing to maintain their place among the top three sides in Group B.
