Cameroon and Egypt in do-or-die clash to stay alive in the race for China 2019

LUANDA (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers) - Day 3 of the second-leg of Group E of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers brings on Sunday in Luanda a do-or-die clash between Cameroon and Egypt.

And although the Egyptians currently sit a point above Cameroon in the group standings, the outcome of this must-watch encounter could go either way, especially because both teams are in a desperate situation to stay alive in the competition.

If Egypt win this highly-anticipated contest they qualify for next year's World Cup, while Cameroon would enhance their chances of becoming the best third-placed team from across Groups E and F, which will earn the right to complete the five-team African lineup for the China 2019 showdown.

But Cameroon need to beat Egypt by four points or more to stay in contention.

So far African teams qualified for the World Cup include Tunisia (10-1), Nigeria (9-0) and Angola (8-3).

Egypt arrived in the Angolan capital aiming to win all three games, and so far, things are working according to plan.

The Pharaohs not only beat Chad on Friday but they kept their perfect record by causing the biggest upset in the African World Cup Qualifiers so far after ending Tunisian's unbeaten run thanks to a 73-64 overtime win on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Cameroon bounced back from a close defeat against hosts Angola on Friday, edging Morocco on Saturday 63-57 to improve their record to 6-5 with the most important game in their history scheduled for Sunday.

What makes this an intriguing matchup to follow up is their recent historical rivalry.

While the Cameroonians display a more talented and athletic group of players, the North African's team spirit and determination set them apart from any opponents they have come across so far.

And that attitude has proven crucial for Egypt as they defeated Cameroon in their last two meetings, dating back to the FIBA AfroBasket 2015.

Two months ago, Cameroon had everything on their hands to deny Egypt, but somehow, they allow Egypt to the result in the last seconds of the game.

"That's a team that has caused us all kinds of difficulties in the past," Cameroon head coach Lazare Adingono said of Egypt.

"I hope with this victory [against Morocco] we get back on track, hopefully, tomorrow it will be the same outcome."

Now, it's do-or-die for either side.
