Angola see off hosts Egypt to book Second Round slot

CAIRO (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers) - Eleven-time record African champions Angola overcame a stubborn Egyptian side 65-58 to advance to the Second Round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers on Saturday.

Will Voigt's men came into this tie needing just one win to qualify for the next round and indeed their approach from the onset showed character to almost shut out the home crowd that was up in arms with drums and ululations at every possession.

Four Angolan players were in double figures to clearly portray the teamwork their exemplified on the night but it was Jerson Goncalves 16 points that stood out.

Yannick Moreira added 14 while Reggie Moore and Edson Ndoniema each dropped 11 points to guide Angola to a rather hard-fought victory.

Egypt find themselves between a rock and a hard place with their win ratio at 2-3 and need to win their next game against Morocco.

Angola join the reigning African champions Tunisia, Nigeria and Cameroon as the four teams to have qualified for the Second Round so far.

Sixteen African nations are competing this week across four African cities (Cairo, Dakar, Lagos, and Tunisia) for the ultimate goal of securing the five tickets on offer for Africa for the  32-team FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in China.
