Cameroon's Nzeulie: ''I hope we can be one of the five African teams to qualify for the World Cup''

YAOUNDE (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers) - As Cameroon prepare to host Group A of FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers, Jeremy Nzeulie is calling on local supporters to come together and show some love to the team.

From November 24-26, Cameroon will face African champions Tunisia, Chad, and Guinea in their capital of Yaounde in a bid to secure one of the three spots for the 12-team decisive Second Round of the Qualifiers.

The 26-year-old guard, who plays for Elan Chalon in France's Pro A, explained to FIBA.basketball the significance of the four-team competition.

"Hosting the first round of the qualifiers is great for Cameroon basketball," he noted. "Our women’s team hosted the African Championship 2015, and it was great to see so many supporters showing up at the games. The team did a great job, and now we’ll try to do the same. We want to give our supporters a chance to know more about international basketball."

Under FIBA's New Competition System, in the Second Round of the Qualifiers, national teams play home-and-away games with the top two teams from each group and the best 3rd-place team booking their places for FIBA's flagship event, taking place from August 31 to September 15, 2019, in China.

"It’s great for basketball in Africa. And I hope Cameroon can be one of the five African teams to qualify for the world cup because we have a great potential," Nzeulie noted.

While Nzeulie sat out the FIBA AfroBasket 2017 in Tunisia where they finished in Fifth-Place, he insists they "did a pretty good job" and they could do even better in Yaounde.

"They could have beaten Tunisia. Overall, it was a young team with young players."

Head coach Antonio Carlos Barbosa made some adjustments from the FIBA AfroBasket team, adding Nzeulie, Kenneth Kadji, and DJ Strawberry.

"It feels good to be part of this group of players," Nzeulie said, adding: "This is one of better [Cameroon] teams I have been part of.

"[Cameroon supporters] have been cheering on me since my national team debut in 2013. I appreciate that, and now that we are playing at home, I’ll see if our home fans love me.

"This team includes players coming from tough leagues like Serbia, France. Names are one thing, but we need to get things done on the basketball court."

Cameroon's objective is "trying to get the most wins in the tournament," he concluded.
