USA - Millsap competes for spot in American squad

LAS VEGAS (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - The United States have bolstered their frontcourt for this week's training camp in Las Vegas with Atlanta Hawks star Paul Millsap.

The move comes in the wake of USA Basketball's announcement that Kevin Love will not play for the Americans at the FIBA Basketball World Cup because of the uncertainty over where he will play next season.

Love has issued a trade demand to his NBA team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, but so far, a move has yet to materialize.

The loss of a player who helped the Americans win the world title in 2010 and Olympic gold in 2012 is a blow but Millsap is a huge talent himself.

The 29-year-old is coming off the best season of his career, one in which made the Eastern Conference All-Star Team.

He was the only player in the NBA in 2013-14 to average at least 17.0 points, eight rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.

"Paul has prior experience at the national team level having participated in the 2009 National Team mini-camp and offers us a veteran inside player who possesses attributes that can be beneficial for us," USA Basketball President and national team manager Jerry Colangelo said in a statement.

Millsap is elated to have the chance to work out with the USA.

If he plays well enough in camp, he could end up making the World Cup squad and helping the defending champions when they compete in Group C, in Bilbao, against Finland, Turkey, New Zealand, the Dominican Republic and Ukraine.

"I'm very excited about being added to the USA men's national team roster," said the eight-year NBA veteran.

"I look forward to practicing with and competing against some of the NBA's best for the honor of representing our country in Spain."
