Greece worry about their own game, staying grounded

MADRID (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Greece don't want to hear what others are saying about them and instead just want to stay focused on their own game as they enter the Round of 16 of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Many considered Croatia as the strongest team in Group B in Sevilla but it was Greece who took top honors with a perfect 5-0 record, setting them up for a showdown against Serbia on Sunday.

"They have a lot of big names but we just have to play to our rhythm and listen to coach and his game plan," said Greek youngster Giannis Antetokounmpo.

It's been a while since Greece reached the podium. They came in third at EuroBasket 2009. They then needed a wild card to get to the World Cup.

But this Greek team is very balanced with a lot of weapons, making it hard to know who will hit you hardest on a given day.

"Any guy can score on any given night for us. All around, if we play good defense our offense will take care of itself," said Nick Calathes, one of three Greeks averaging double-digits scoring along with Giannis Bourousis and Georgios Printezis.

Six other players have scored in double figures in at least one game.

We have to be serious and respect everybody and play our game regardless of opponent. - Papanikolaou

"We have to play the same every day and keep up the same good level," said Kostas Papanikolaou, who has struggled from the outside, hitting just 1-of-8 three-pointers but played his usual tough defense.

But Papanikolaou said this Greek team has to get out and run whenever they can.

"We have a lot of guys that can run the court and who have to take advantage of that and score as many transition points as possible," he pointed out.

Greece know they have already achieved something special by winning five straight games but their quest is not done. Still, they must realise that they must stay grounded, something they have done well thus far.

"We don't listen to what others say. Coach says after the game to just stay grounded. If we keep doing what we're doing, we’re going to do something big,” added Antetokounmpo.
