Things to know ahead of FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers draw

Bengaluru (India) - There’s only a few days left before the draw of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers. Once the process on June 8, 2019 is completed, fans will finally get to know which teams that will have to go through to qualify for the FIBA Asia Cup in 2021. Before we get there, let’s freshen up with some facts about the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers!

  • This is the first-ever Qualifiers held leading towards the FIBA Asia Cup. The format was first introduced in 2017. The 24 teams to participate in the Qualifiers are the 16 teams from the previous Asia Cup along with 8 additional teams that advanced through regional Pre-Qualifiers. Therefore, this will also be the very first draw for the event as well.
  • Bengaluru will serve as the historical site to host the very first FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers draw. Though the southern Indian city itself has never hosted a FIBA Asia Cup tournament, another city in India has had the chance to host the largest regional competition in Asia. Kolkata, a city in East India, once held the FIBA Asia Cup in 1981.
  • The Asia Cup Qualifiers will also be featuring an exciting newcomer to the group. After the 2017 edition of the tournament ushered in the debuts of Oceania nations, Australia and New Zealand, the Qualifiers will be giving a chance to Guam as the next Oceania team to make their way to the FIBA Asia Cup.
Guam made their way through the East Region Pre-Qualifiers with ease and it will be interesting to see how they will fare against stiffer competition in the upcoming round.

  • The 24 participating teams will be drawn into 6 groups of 4 teams at the event in Bengaluru. They will be drawn from pots according to their geographical location and positions in the FIBA World Ranking FIBA World Ranking Men, presented by NIKE.

  • The top seeded teams heading into the draw will be the top 3 teams from the East Region (Australia, China, and the Philippines) as well as the top 3 teams from the West Region (Iran, Jordan, and Lebanon).
  • The Qualifiers will be played in 3 windows of competition between teams within the same group as well as another qualification round. Through these rounds of competition, 16 teams will be left standing as the squads to play at the FIBA Asia Cup 2021.
  • Of all the teams in participation, Korea has the longest active streak of qualifying for the Asia Cup. The two-time Asia Cup champions have played in all 29 tournaments, the only nation to have done so in the region. The longest Asia Cup drought that has to opportunity to be stopped is held by Sri Lanka, whose last appearance in the tournament was way back in 2009.
